it's not really a matter of 'he claimed he could trace his roots'...it was more a matter of the solomonic dynasty started out claiming descent from king solomon & queen of sheba's son who when crowned took the name menelik the first...since then it was said that any king from the solomonic dynasty had to be a descendant of menelik...their official title was 'king of kings, lord of lords, conquering lion of the tribe of judah, elect of god'...
they all had that title, not just haile selassie the first...he was a descendant of sahle selassie who was a king of shoa province & also related to menelik the second who was the cousin of his father ras mekonnen...
who knows, it's possible he was escended from solomon & sheba...it can't be proved but it can't be disproved...regardless, due to events that transpired, only the ethiopian kings could claim lineage from solomon...so therefore 'the root of david & lion of judah'

Some of the sharpest critiques of the neocolonial conceptions of the nation have come from old Garvey activists and Rastafarians who had articulated varied conceptions of Jamaica as a black nation and of its relationship to Africa. The brown and black middle class, who benefited considerably from the transition to independence-given the expansion of education and the opening up of the civil service as well as of the executive and legislative areas of government -- tended to turn its back on Garvey or used his ideas as a means of social control. In this context, from the 1940s to 1960s, Garveyism tended to be equated with Rastafari, since the Rastafarians embraced Garvey as their prophet. In the thinking of the Rastafarians, after Garvey's death in 1940, he assumed mythic proportions, second only to Emperor Haile Selassie. Barry Chevannes has identified four themes in his Rastafarian informants' understanding of Garvey: Africa for the Africans, black unity, self-reliance, and racial pride. He has also exposed the myths that have developed about Garvey, which he groups into the categories "Garvey as divine," "Garvey as John the Baptist," and "Garvey as prophet." These understandings stand in sharp contrast to what are referred to as "Garvey's curses": financial disaster with the purchase of the worthless Black Star Line and his poor management skills as a leader and financial planner.(42)

Pressures from the rest of society against Rastafari, in the years leading up and subsequent to political independence, have created closer bonds between Rastafari and Garveyism while not eroding differences in outlook among their followers. Moreover, while Rastafari as a movement has grown and spread internationally, no Garvey movement exists, in an organic sense,(43) at the end of the twentieth century. But Garvey's ideas and views remain important and are a point of reference at the popular level as well as in Jamaican state and local politics, due to his status as one of Jamaica's national heroes. An appropriate question to raise is: What will be the future of Rastafari? Might it suffer the fate of Garveyism, maintaining a legacy without a movement? Might it become organized into a political force that would cause it to lose its cultural dynamics and forget its roots and ethos? Perhaps its decentralized and less organized (than Garveyism) nature will prove to be Rastafari's own salvation.

Hon. Marcus Garvey. Sir,
I read your article in the August issue of the "Black Man" entitled "The Italian Conquest," also your unjust criticism of Emperor Haile Selassie.
We in America do not believe those are your sentiments. Sir, you know Abyssinia was hemmed in by colonies dominated by whites. When Mussolini declared his intention of subduing Ethiopia he made it clear that his specific reason was to suppress the arms traffic for the benefit of Europe. That statement met with the approval of all Europe. What excuse could the Emperor give for setting up a munitions factory?
Mussolini also stated there were eleven coloured to every one white person in the world and if the whites were to continue to dominate they must control the world. You speak about slavery in Abyssinia as though it was the kind of slavery we were put in by the Europeans. King Menelik's mother was a slave.1 That's the facility Abyssinian slavery may have. Here we are free in the Western Hernisphere yet we are segregated even in the churches where all must humble themselves before God.
The Emperor is a descendant of Solomon.2 Why should he renounce his right to his heritage on either side? Solomon was a Jew, "black but comely."3 The original Jews were a black race, history tells us.4 Solomon and the Queen of Sheba give him a background rivalled by no other monarch in the world.
I feel like a lot of others that you have been quite unfair in your writing. The Emperor's wife is an Ethiopian.5 Why do you blame him for the wives his diplomats marry? Moses' wife was an African woman,6 not of Jewish stock, and he led the children of Israel through the Red Sea. Solomon fell in love with the Queen of Sheba who was not of his race, but whose country supplied the gold for the building of the temple which God desired.
