What about those who crossed border/jurisdictions? (eg moved from a French-controlled country like Haiti to the USA)

The case for reparations relies on what has become the public acceptance that some how every problem or perceived problem is fixed by throwing a dollar its way. That blacks have been terribly damaged by slavery, which has somehow led to their plight and therefore I(or someone) should give them money. Slavery was brutal and ugly. It was, however, hard on the slaves, not on today's blacks.

Ok, let me put it in a simpler way so maybe it won't be so hard for you to understand.
I never owned a slave and you never were one. That means no one owes you anything!....More opportunist trying to get something for nothing.

RichD, slave owners were for the most part wealthy individuals. It was a luxury. The average person did not own slaves. My ancestors came to this country poor and were indentured servants. They were treated quite poorly. They were indentured to the ruling elite....They weren't quite slaves but they were far from free.

That's typical of someone who has lost an arguement or concedes a point....You want money from people that had nothing to do with your plight.....Than again what plight?!? You have to be wronged to get compensation and you have not!...I can understand why you would not want to debate such nonsense because you don't have a case.

lonrwolf, do you believe that currently there is a level field of opportunities for different ethnic groups within the USA?

Secondly, what is your opinion of the slave-owners, which also incidentally "got something for nothing"?

I was refering to those among the black population who might have ancestors who were slave owners...

If you are asking me if I believe that there are people that still discriminate against minorities for jobs, I would say have to say I believe that every situation is different. A company might have to fill a "quota" which gives a minority the edge. If this company needs a woman and needs someone black they can fill their requiremnets by hiring a black female.
It would not matter if there was a black male or white male or white female that had better credentials....it's a slippery slope. I believe that affirmative action has inflicted the very wrong it was trying to correct and that is hiring according to ones "race" or "gender" and not according to ones competence and ability....but then again if you are a Mexican you have the best chance of getting a job in the area that I live in because they work long and hard and don't expect much in return...gradually they prove their "worth" to a company and work their way up the ladder. This is especially true in construction.
