I had nightmares the chair would be broken or not working upon arrival.., no problems so far.
Terry would have been heartboken.
I woke up at 5am today knowing he's getting this chair tomorrow (Sat) has kept me freeting All night. I can't wait for the photos, I hope someone takes few shots [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]ray:
I plan on calling him as soon as I get word he's got it and taken a ride around his yard.

Stan first of all, this is so wonderful, but surprises me not when it comes to you. You and wifey are such good people.

I had held back comment as I was waiting to see what the King's ransom would be to get this item in the country.

Angie and I had a lady call us about GFT who is wheelchair bound. She was inguiring about wheelchair access on GFT to our events. Angie and I discussed this at length, and with the help of some friends, decided there was no where she couldn't go with us. But she asked a question I had never thought about, because in my 15 trips I do not remember ever seeing a Jamaican in a wheelchair.

I had seen many come off the ships in Ochii, but not anyone I can recall who lives there. I am sure there is such a thing, but I just had not seen it.

I have seen people with legs missing getting around on rag padded tree stumps, or hopping on the one good leg, and all sorts of things, but never a wheelchair.


For the team effort you put forth to bring this about, you have changed a life. God is watching.

THat chair wasn't that fast when it left the US,it's just to keep up in Jamaica, it had to be souped up.

Makes me wonder how many other Terrys are there stuck inside [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
Most are likely shut ins and have little offered to them in the way of help, too sad to even think about.
Betty and I believe in "one brick at a time", all good things can be built.
Now if i could win that lotto not only would I build that Negrilaholics retirement home, I'd build a few other special places as well.

Stan when the Girlfriends were here in Memphis I bought them all lottery tickets and we all pledged to buy one once a week and who ever hit woud take care of the others. I think I am the only one still buying them every week. I buy the same three sets of numbers for the Wed. and Sat. Drawings, so I really try twice a week.

Don't even let me start talking about what I would do Jamaica-wise if I won.

New Flash...this just in from Westmoreland...
Terry has his chair home.
He hasn't taken a ride in it as the place was packed with family and friends.
I called him and we had to scream just to overcome the crowd.We both conveyed our joy and feelings to each other, as best we could.
One problem though, Terry has better use of his left hand and the chair is right hand drive.
I gave instructions the best I could, that the controls could be moved over to the other side.
The mounting screw holes are already there for this purpose, I hope someone can figure it out quickly for him.
The control cable is also movable as it's held in place with plastic cable ties.
I know, too much information

His will take time to ajust to his "Ride" as he is shy and leary of others feeling sorry for him.
He's content to just look at it for now.
He has to let it sink in.
Freedom is a new concept for him to deal with and he has both excitement and doubts.

He will be going to Selinas on Suday for the Sunday Brunch BC and wants to be on TV, Juju told him we could see him.
I doubt he'll be in chair , but you never know.
Don't matter, he'll get out and about, at his own pace.

What a Sunday Morning:
I was up tight and awake a 5 am this morning, today was the day of Terrys big adventure.
I've been on all the boards since early , trying to wish the time to fly by.
Finally the Broadcast was starting, now I was really nervous hoping all would go well.
After several frantic phone calls we got word his helper hadn't shown up to dress him as promised. He'd been excited and had "water from da eyes" wanting so bad to go to Selinas.
A crowd had formed there and at the webcast.
It was fully packed, the most I've ever seen in a long time.
Kat a newbie to Negril had taken on the task of trying to get Terry down to Selinas..Lol
She didn't even know where to go...Bless her.
After a two hour wait we got word he was 10 min away...the excitment on the chat and at Selinas really picked up.
Well he rolled in to applause and the tears here were flowing right away. Betty and I were beside ourselves with happiness and joy.
It was a long hard ride for him trust me on that folks, i took it over to the gas station to fill the tire with air. My trip was on side walks and it wore me out bouncing all around.
What he did today was tough, but nothing was going to stop him.
Betty dialed his cell as soon as he got there and the pure joy in his voice said it all, freedom is not to be taken lightly.
He told me it rides like a Limo, and the people were coming out to see him all along the way.
No one had ever seen a power wheelchair in Negril...the First One...

(Marilyn brought this point up and i think she was right.)
It was like a parade of people all along his route that kept coming out to view his "Ride"
That's why he was soooo late.
I couldn't take my eyes of the screen as he sat there and a steady stream on people came over to wish him well and say hello.
He was overwhelmed with the kindness and love shown him by so many strangers and "water from da eyes" came several times.
After the Broadcast , he was last reported by Jess to be motoring back along Norman Manley with the biggest smile on his face, now that folks is "Priceless"
Betty and I are so proud of what he did today, he showd "No Fear" and went for it. Thats courage built on faith alone folks, bless him.
We both feel honored to know him and blessed that we were able to help him.
Live strong and ride on, Terry, I can't wait to meet you again in Negril. We gonna party inna a yard...mon

Oh Stan! I looked into the broadcast this afternoon and saw Terry there in his chair, and yeah that eye water was running, what a sweet sight for sore eyes! He rode all the way to Selina's from home, WOW! Does he have an orange flag or something to attach to the chair so drivers can notice him? Pure joy, what a feeling he must have now, such freedom!!!
