The 7000 feet blue mountain range is not a hurricanes friend...so that`s what Dennis doesn`t like...so him gone guh look for fidel

well its 11am ish and the sun is just about shining in St.Bess, no rain right now, but some this morning...the fishing boats are still out to sea...Floyd has stripped down the Pelican Bar as much as possible and the safafri boats have been taken futher up the river...everyone is battened down as much as poosible, and has collected water and food supplies...we have a big pot of soup and a good game of domino's going, so not all bad!!
But it looks like this one will be worse than Ivan...all we can do now is sit, pray and wait...

Ivan didn't hit Jamaica,it turned at the last minute but Dennis will hit JA (or so the weather man says!)

I was in St.Mary when Ivan was around and damage wasn't too bad for there compared to other places....now I'm in St.Bess...this area got trashed from Ivan...but we'll have to wait and see what happens this time....but looks like Portmore always suffers the most...some people still havn't got their homes rebuilt from last year.
But if its only a cat 2 maybe were all worrying for nothing

HURRICANE DENNIS TO PASS CLOSE TO JAMAICA AND STILL A THREAT

A HURRICANE WARNING remains in effect for the island as Hurricane Dennis continues on a path close to the island. This means that dangerous hurricane conditions are expected during the next 24 hours.

At 10:00 a.m. the centre of Hurricane Dennis was located near Latitude 18.0 degrees North, Longitude 75.6 degrees West, or about 60 kilometres east of Morant Point, Jamaica.

Dennis is now moving towards the northwest near 20 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. The forecast is for the centre of Hurricane Dennis to remain over the waters of the Caribbean, circling Jamaica’s east coast and then moving between the island and eastern Cuba this afternoon. It should then begin to move away from Jamaica while heading towards western Cuba this evening through Friday morning.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 165 km/h, making Dennis a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. With additional strengthening being forecast to occur today, the system could become a Category 3 hurricane within the next 24 hours. Hurricane force winds currently extend about 75 kilometres from the centre of the hurricane, and tropical storm force winds extend outward 220 kilometres. This means that the island is still at risk of hurricane-force winds, at least for the next 6-8 hours.

Latest radar reports indicate that heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to affect the island and are being detected over central and eastern parishes while spreading towards the west. Rainfall amounts of 200-300 millimetres should be expected, especially over mountainous areas, and this could produce life-threatening flash floods and landslides.

Storm surge flooding of 1 to 2 metres above normal tide levels along with exceptionally high waves are also possible, mainly over northeastern coastal areas.

All interests should continue to monitor subsequent Releases from the Meteorological Service, and small craft operators are advised to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and wind and sea conditions have returned to normal.

The next Bulletin on Hurricane Dennis will be issued at 2:00 p.m.

LibbyT, Ivan bruished by 50 miles south and was cat. 4. Dennis is brushing by closer north and as Arco is saying, windy at Winifred Beach in the Fairy Hill area of east Portland and at cat.2

so Dennis is not supposed to be as bad as Ivan

No buses or flights available

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, will not be sending out its buses Thursday.
Public Relations and Marketing Manager at the JUTC Gwyneth Harold told the RJR News centre that the company is closely monitoring developments with Hurricane Dennis to decide when to resume service.

Although it will not be operating, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company has been placed on alert to assist with evacuations.

And Transport Minister Robert Pickersgill says the island's two international airports will remain closed until further notice.

The Norman Manley and Sangster International Airports were closed Wednesday night due to the threat of Hurricane Dennis.

Mr. Pickersgill says he is to meet with management representatives of both airports to decide when they should be re-opened.

Air Jamaica has already announced that several flights have been cancelled.

Thank Goodness...I was so fed up of sweeping out water last year...we were wet for days...and no cold drinks or ice was a real bummer (I can manage without light but I didn't appreciate what a cold drink meant untill I'd had none for days)...and don't even start about bully beef and mackerel !!

Hi Nina...were fine...as always we trust in a higher force...I'm more worried about whats going on in London...all cel phones lines are down and we cant reach our children and families...I alwasy hated the bombings, you never knew who or where was next...at least with a hurricane you know its coming!
