I saw an interview yesterday with the Prime Minister of SIngapore....it was on a PBS station. he quoted a study that showed that only in TWO count em TWO countries did the majority of those surveyed say that they respect America - India and Poland.

Time to pause, take stock of the reasons and take some corrective action.

So, what does this poll mean? Does it mean that ALL of the countries in the world should get to vote on how the US exercises it's power? No I didn't think so?

Does it mean that the US is bad and owes people of the world money? We should vote to give away our money and military might to other countries?

Unfortunately international relations are not popularity contests. I can assure you, that the US will not change the basic policy of regime change for those countries that HATE us and are ruled by dictators. They will change, and they will change because the people in those countries want to live free, and provide a better future for their children.

And. over the next decade, free countries everywhere will purge their societies of religious nuts who are willing to blow themselves up (for what ever reason). It won't be fun for anyone.

No it means that America needs to think about it's image and the perception that people have of them based on their foreign policy. Remember it wasn't the dictators who were surveyed. It was members of the general public. ALL of these countries don't have dictators. If they don't, resentment will continue to build and it will be just a matter of time before we see suicide bombers in the US. This is a VERY scarey thought. Canada isn't helping it's image internationally either. Based on reports in Canadian newspapers today, Canada will be stepping up it's involvement in Afghanistan. I will post the article in a separate thread. Just lovely. Guess we had all better stay out of subway cars, high buildings and buses.

Tropicana, polls such as the one you've cited are just as valid as any that would be done on this site. For example, if a poll should use you or any other conscious, assertive, outspoken, resilient and knowledgable poster in place of america what would be the results? The results would possible be the same and equally irrelevant to who you really are or what your intentions might be in doing what you need to do to develop and maintain as a successful person.

The Prime Minister of Singapore is a bright and HIGHLY educated man. I don't believe he would quote from a source that is not credible.

There is much in the Arabic islamic world; this includes the middle east that is wrong... Lack of education, lack of womens rights, preventable disease, corruption, intolerance...

As a book on philosophy it is easy to find contrdtions in the holy Koran. It is understandable in that it was evolved / revealed over a period of 25 years to the Prophet Mohammed Peace be on his name....

However I take exception to the insinuation that Allah is a devil. To characterise more than a billion people as worshipers of devils is exactly the attitude that the Neoconserative politics which led to the events in the middle east. It makes no attempt to understand a moral system of life., with its complexities and its varieties.

Its sense of morality, respect for ones elders, of ancestors, of the contention between the ethereal and corporeal realities was the strongest link in the chain that kept them warm in times of trouble. Indeed apart from thje commonality of the Caribbean DNA Obeah was a significant link to its African heritage. The movement away toward a post Nicene European inspired Christianity is significant as its dislocations of the past.

As for your attitude toward islam... I have lived traveled among the Muslim for a long time. Last night in fact I enjoyed a meal prepared by a Muslim. Afterwards we laughed talked long into the night... I count among my close personal friends a number of Muslims. To let your verbiage stand unchallenged is insulting to my relationship to these my friends.. It is significant that part of they welcome that one feels in Arabic country’s is the significance that Mohammed left instructions to his followers to be kind to visitors to protect them.

I for my part have explored the backstreets of Tripoli, Cairo, Nouchott, Tunis, Sfax, Casablanc, Alexandria in complete ... I have been made to feel welcome.. I have been help in many touching ways..(A complete strange talked a policeman out of giving me a ticket. Been lost in the desert and a Bedou given me his bed, been taken in a competete strangers car on an 800 mile drive to a desert in a medical emergency.)... incidents of a thousand small coutestiesies. Been made welcome and felt like a friend on a handshake.... I know among the people I know, this week there was a look in the eyes that they felt guilt among many believers that murder has been committed on women and children. Done in the name of their beleif.

I find this posting insulting and frankly break both the letter and spirit of the rules of this board....

All countries' leaders have their own agenda. The only difference is that some have been more successful than others. The singapore prime minister is in no position to speak on the subject, if you should ask the people who live under his dictatorship or his neighbours in southeast asia, like Indonesia and Malaysia....the people he treats like 3rd class rejects.

Yet despite this disdain especially through out the Middle east where I beleive that dislike for the US runs at high 80's.. The country that most people want to immigrate to is the US. Yes there has been polls that say this#.. No I dont have a link..

It is also conceivable that the bit that produces the Anti US feeling is iits forgien policy. Wheter any one wants to acknolwedge it or not.. Both US, Canada and Europe is viewed in a schophenic manner by most who has great dislilke.. Its tolerance is highly regarded.. Their opertunities are craved for by the poor but dynamic...

What about religious nuts who are willing to let other people's children get blown up (a.k.a. GW). See, it all depends on how you see it. You can argue that we need to get rid of terrorists in other countries. I can argue that for hundreds of years terrorists flourished freely in this country - many of them were members of this gov. - and no one did anything about it. Bull Conner was a terrorist. David Duke was a terrost. And Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist. And what about those who allowed terroism to continue and did nothing. Our forefathers, for example, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson. These men were slave owners. They watched terrorism and genocide happen - and participated in it for their own personal financial gain - but we celebrate them every President's Day. Their picture is on our currency.

The perception is always different when you're on the outside looking in.

Hey let's not get side tracked here. I pointed to the poll as just one more piece of evidence that the UK and the US have MAJOR problems in terms of their foreign policy and how people perceive and feel about it.

Dismiss the poll if you like but airplanes crashing into buildings and bombs on subways and buses speak VOLUMES and we would be wise to pay attention before this sort of thing becomes a daily occurence as in the middle east.

I actually agree with you but I dont beleive that it is that simple.. Tehre is a dicotony in the way the US is regarded. Both as a devil as well as a source of hope of bettering ones self. .. As for me I still hold Kanada with great suspision....


I beleive that this incident in the UK underline what a number of commentator in the UK have pointed out. Tghere is a mass of first and seacond genreation immigrants who are disenfrancished. What I find surprising is that one of the alleged bombers had a wife and child. The importance that Islam places on family makes this almost inconciable....

What I find surprising is that one of the alleged bombers had a wife and child. The importance that Islam places on family makes this almost inconciable....

Why the surprise? Do you believe that everyone who worship Allah and are Muslims has the same intention? There are as many fraudsters, liars and people with misguided religious zeal as in any other religion, so I do not doubt that they are just as corrupt and wicked.

Oh dear, this thread has certainly veered off on a tangent. **no bakkle flinging or missiles, please**

It is interesting to see the viewpoints expressed here, many hearts are still full and screaming for some sort of "justice." I have no problem with that; however if we are to survive as a "race," as a "people" we have to look beyond our own prejudices and start seeing things in the broader context.

Some of these comments reek of intolerance, a major part of the problems in the world today. [it is demonstrated right here on this message board on a daily basis] Most of feel that we are ALWAYS right and the other party always wrong; failing to understand the fragility of human nature and how the human race is contributing to it's own demise. If anyone dares oppose our POV that person automatically becomes the enemy, in many cases worthy of death...no ifs ands or buts..correct me if I am wrong.

I might be playing "devil's advocate" here, but this is how I feel right now.

Everyone is entitled to his or her OWN opinions, but if we are going to harp on the same old story of who did what to whom as I mentioned before there would be no room to accomodate the list of atrocities. No group, no ethnicity is innocent, no not one; and again, I am not minimizing the atrocities that occur currently on a global scale..WE need to listen, and we need to TALK, communicate honestly and fairly, and learn from each other without prejudice, showing tolerance and not intolerance and ignorance...and oh yes, that is a very hard call, but it can be done.

We don't have to agree on everything, that is what makes each and everyone of us unique, but we must be willing to exercise the art of compromise and RESPECT. We, as a race of people, ie the human race for starters need to start trying to understanding each other if not plainly and simply we will all be extinct.

Strangely, many ethnicities are commiting atrociteis on their own..They do not need any "outsider" to do it for them..the murders in Africa based on tribal divisions, based on religion; and specifically what is going on in the Sudan as we speak; the vibrant slave trade in Africa, the divisions in Korea, the fighting in Russia based on age-old conflicts, the deep-seated rivaly between the "French" and the "British," the enmity between Indians both in India and Pakistan, ethnic and political divisions in Turkey, Mafio-so against Maf-ioso, with their blood letting when they are ready; to name a few; and the list goes on and on..ohh lest I forget, the murders in Jamaica, black on black crime; what is happening in Haiti, the first emancipated colony in the West..

If ethnicities cannot live together as "one" then how in hell are they going to live peacefully with others? Who's zooming err fooling who here? I'm not even going to bother mentioning the intra religious conflicts, fundamentalists against SDA's, Mus-lims against Mus-lims[refer to Iraq/Saudia Arabia et al]. Each group is it's own enemy for starters. Now: What is it with us Jamaicans that make us so wicked?

This is a generalisation, no? There are psychopaths in every group, every nation. One does not have to blow up trains, and innocent ppl alone, to be classified as wicked. HYPOCRITES are wicked people too yuh noh; including those at the UN!! Wicked ppl in the seats of government are wicked as well, yuh noh. Atrocities come in many shapes and forms; but many times we fail to see it, period!!

The point I am trying to make is, each and everyone can offer a reason to JUSTIFY their feelings about the global dillemma, but there is NO justification for ambushing and murdering innocent people, in whatever shape or form that might take....U R at liberty to interpret that any way you choose.
