YUP...cause when you least expect it...IT will happen. For me...I have given up on even looking tried the internet...gave it up...tried speed dating...only did it once...even gave up on friends trying to fix me up. I just decided I was done looking...then one day someone who had been under my nose for 5 years...became MY Mr. Right...

I lived in student apartments on campus. One of my roommates had a couple of salient traits: one, his lifelong ambition was to become an officer in the U.S. Marines; and two, he didn't have a lot of use for black people. He was an interesting character, and I haven't met too many like him.

Anyway, one day I'm sitting at home and watching TV, and in he comes with this cute black girl, chatting and laughing like old friends. It turned out that they were both History majors, had taken several classes together, were more or less "best enemies" in their classes, and when he'd run into her on campus that day, he'd offered to take her to this really, really good rib joint he and I had found the semester previous. They came into the apartment with the barbeque they'd bought.

Well, she, being raised by Jamaicans, wasn't about to eat in front of foodless me, so she bullied him into giving me a rib. Thus began a career of kind and generous acts on her part toward me. The fool! HAHAhahahahahahaaaa!

Back to the story. The fact that she was hanging out with him, and they were so friendly-like, was intriguing to me, and of course she had thrown me a bone (metaphorically and - more or less - literally), and of course she was attractive, so I blended into the conversation and soon it turned out that she and I had more interests in common than she and he had, and we hung out and chatted for hours, then watched "Moonlighting" and "thirtysomething" together.

Exactly a week later, she visited our apartment again, and I ended up monopolizing her time, and we retired to the bedroom to watch our two TV shows again. We'd gotten cozy enough for me to be ginning up my nerve to try a kiss when another roommate, brand-new to the apartment and Mr. Personality, barged in to introduce himself and get to know me.

So the next Tuesday came around, but no visit. So did the next Tuesday, and I figured I'd just missed my chance.

Then, flyers went up all over campus: the spring theatrical production was going to be "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and auditions were open. I'd done some acting in community theater in my early teens, and thought that since I'd gone thousands of miles away from home to school, and I was consciously trying new challenges, and I was a big Shakespeare fan, I'd audition. Got to the audition, and it turned out that she had very much the same thought process: she had done some theater years before, saw the flyers, liked the Bard, and decided, on a lark, to try out. We were both cast; the show went on nine weeks later, and by then we were dating exclusively. Another year and a half or so, and we were engaged.
