Funny enough Simon the Cyrene standing shoulder to shouler with Christ carrying the cross brought to mind vividly during the flick the plight of black folks. Remember he was forced to carry the cross.

What I find interesting is that there seem to be TWO [major] potential reactions to the movie; I see this in both here and "Real Life" amongst my friends who have seen it. (And, please remember, none of these personal friends of whom I'm speaking are remotely related to West Indian culture, unlike most peeps here, which I also find interesting. Does this movie transcend cultural barriers, I wonder? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] )


First: I did not see it. Don't know, yet, if I will... (If I do, it will have to be either alone, or else, with some friend/s who've already seen in once - or more.)


Second: I found that everyone I know who's seen it seems to have had one of two reactions. No more and no less...


Reaction the First:
It was a well-written, well-done movie (yet, please remember, it is only a hollywood creation) with some flaws in the truth of the telling (factually, that is). It is extremely (but, perhaps not overly) bloody and violent. It tells the basic story, but without the benefit of either the entire truth (according to the Scriptures themselves AND to secular historical documents) or any newness to the telling of the story. (ie: no new angle, nor viewpoint, etc.)
Summary: Unless I personally find it somehow important to see - actually visually 'see with my own eyes' - the minutia of the bloody details of His suffering... and since I already KNOW the Scriptural and the secular historical facts quite well, there is no reason for me to waste either my couple of hours or my nine and a half dollars to see this film.


Reaction the Second:
The movie was well-written, well-told, and completely factual (I already KNOW it is not completely so!); that "it is as it was" (not 100% true). That I should indeed go see this movie - remember to bring an entire box of kleenex or a few hankies - to "truly understand what He suffered ... for ... [us all]". That it is sufficiently blooy that I might wish to 'close my eyes and let my ears do all the terrible work' during the scourging. That the Jews were 'no more disposed to evil than anybody else was then or is today', and that they 'should be forgiven' as Jesus forgave everyone (I think that what was meant in this part of the discussion was "the Romans"). That this movie really "opened ["my", maning the speakers'] eyes and taught me how important forgiveness is"...
Summary:
That, after seeing this movie, I will '[have] gained a better understanding of just how much Jesus loves me', and that it will change forever my own personal relationship with Him. THat this movie will have 'brought me there to the Crucifixion' to 'experience it first-hand'.


The first reaction was from a group of about a dozzen Anglican clergy and lay clergy (the people with whom I had originally intended to go with to see the movie). All of the priests in this group, and most of the lay clergy (such as myself), know me, personal;ly, quite well. They know me, they know my understanding and grasp of the issues, and
they know "where I am at" spiritually.

The second reaction was from a number of neighbors and casual acquaintences (it just happens to be that they are all various Penetcostal-type of Protestant denominations... but that may or may not not have a thing to do with anything) who all know me, but not all that well...


The overall suggestion is that I go to see the movie (if indeed I do so) with someone, but that it's not the sort of movie to go see alone. Many of the people of the second group plan on seeing it again (with other buddies than those whom they saw it the first time), and offered to tell me when they decide to go.


Now, I ask those of oonu who've seen it:
Do you think either of the reactions [above] are lacking any major pertinent info that I ought to know about when deciding whether or not to go see it?

I haven't been around here for quite some time now, and I must say it could only take something as life-changing as this movie to bring me back. I thought for sure that it would be discussed at length here as everyone in some way or another would have an opinion about it. So I decided to log on and poke my nose in to see what was been said about it.

My church bought out the seats at the Yorkdale Theatre this past Saturday morning @ 10:00a.m. It was an experience of a life time, to be sitting in a movie theatre with your church brothers and sisters watching a re-inactment of what took place over 2 thousand years ago.

Of course listening to everyone from the media to certain groups about this movie and how graphic and bloody it was - it made me wonder whether or not they thought this was some story that Mel Gibson and company just threw together for effect and for that reason should have left out some of the beatings and mutilating among other things. The last time I checked this was scriptural - this is not NEWS. It has been the word for as long I can remember and will be long after I am gone. It happened and I commend Mel for taking all that controversy, all that heat and going the distance with it.

I cried like a baby during those 2 hours - I sat in my seat just asking myself, "for me"? "You did all that for me.? To be able to visualize in that context some of what took place (because for those of us who live for Him, we know He suffered more than that), so many years ago for the likes of me, was so humbling. I cannot help but praise Him - to know that it was LOVE, He did it all for LOVE. Never before has John 3:16 meant more to me than it does right now. I am so thankful, so grateful for that great sacrifice. Words truly escape me to tell Him just how thankful I am.

I encourage everyone to see this movie, because it really puts things into perspective in terms of our whole reason for being alive, and what we shuold be doing with this gift of life. We ought to make the most of everyday we are given, and to serve God like it's the last second, minute, hour, day, that we have left here on this earth. I have re-dedicated my life to Him for all that He has done for me. I say to God be the glory, great things He hath done. Bless your holy name for ever and ever, Amen.
