that's true. There is Black but it's more Lebanese, East Indian, Egyptian, Phillipines, Chinese, White, Croatia. Busy bus stops, lots of ethnic shops, rusty pickup trucks, busiest Wallmart in town [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] , families out together. Lots of activity. Lively community.

Before people use words they should really find out all the word means. Nuances, innuendo, inflection and tone in using a word can change the meaning of the word. If people really knew the fully meaning of a words they use, people would have very little to say. Words are powerful, asking any politician or actor.

I was trying to remember that expression. Following blugiant's question to its logical conclusion: trailer trash = white and redneck = white too. I actually think trailer trash is more derogatory than ghetto.

Trailer trash and ghetto are both derogatory.

For the most part when I've heard/seen the term ghetto, it's been in reference to blacks, but I have also seen it used in reference to certain behaviors, NOT EXCLUSIVELY black behaviors.

A poster here once said that "drinking the milk from the cereal bowl is so GHETTO" Hell every kid I knew growing up did that and I grew up in white neighborhoods.

Now trailer trash! THAT seems to be an exclusively WHITE title. Low income, low class, poor taste, junk cars in the yard, beer drinking, big belly, bad teeth, plastic furniture kinda folk.

my kids use it to refer to poor or cheap quality stuff. like:

"mom, when we're moving you're throwing out the ghetto beds right?"

or

"did you see that girl's hair, it's sooooooo ghetto".

i lived in a neighbourhood where the people claimed the title with pride:

"yah gwan like seh yu betta dan wi, yu noh know seh a ghetto yu live?" and that was a predominantly black neighbourhood.

depends in what context the word is used,but not everyone that comes from/live in a ghetto is black.
I would imagine the word "ghetto" when used in certain context simply means cheap,common,or of no class.

One last interjection. I think also, the interputation may be 'generational' spacific as well. I grew up in an era charaterised as, "The Days of Rage". I was a Black Panther, and my dad was following the Muslin theme and would listen to EVERY, speach Malcolm X, did on Saturdays. I would listen right along side of him. In being exposed to all of that and more things, which I will not mention, it molded my thinking about, ghetto, and it's evolution to what the current generation has made it to be. I guess the group "WAR", where ahead of their times, with their song, "The World Is A Ghetto!"

good point, but the labels that ytee dont necessarily mean that it is a true description of ppl, black or otherwise
it seems to me that ytee always change the definition of words to suit themselves

regarding the derogatory terms ghetto or trailor trash to describe ppl, I know white and black that are from areas that are deemed to be ghetto and trailor parks...just a thought what is good for some ain't good for all

Trailer trash is extremely derogatory and it's rarely as straight forward as Jerry Springer.

In fact, "Trailer Trash" is often labelled against the children of poor, single, young, white welfare mothers and it's no fault of the children.
