Negril - My "Short but Sweet" Week in Jamaica.

Part 1

I opened my Post Office Box and held my breath. Excitedly, I pulled the thick letter from its confines. I did it! I signed the lease and now it has been returned. Signed, sealed and delivered. It was too late now to change my mind and, thank goodness, I didn’t want to change it either. Tomorrow I will be on the plane flying to see MY new home.

Wow! That sounds so strange yet so comforting. I leased a room in the main house amidst a beautifully pastoral setting on a two-acre farm about a mile and a half outside of Negril.

My good friend, Shereth Watson, is managing a 10-unit Guest House called Six Love that includes a full bar and restaurant now known as “Double Aces” Bar and Authentic Island Cuisine.

My traveling companion would be an 81-year old practicing Sikh who wears a turban when traveling. He is the father of my good friend where I live in Lantana Florida.

I was more than a little concerned that the turban could present a challenge in these days of heightened terrorism alert. Also, I wondered if he would be comfortable in Jamaica but knew he previously lived in India, Kenya and England that, like Jamaica, were all part of the Commonwealth.

Tomorrow I would find out soon enough.

Part 2

I couldn’t sleep all night. Tossing and turning and getting up to check to see if I packed this gift or that toothpaste had my nerves on edge when the alarm clock rang at 6:00am. I woke up my friend and his father to get the gang moving towards a drop off at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. We got there before the counter opened so, being first in line, we were able to check in a little easier and I was able to carry the heavy bags over to the search area without too much trouble.

Now, they didn’t even open my friend’s bags but they heavily searched mine! The irony wasn’t lost on me as we went through the security checkpoint where they pulled him aside and scanned him and his clothes from head to foot. The wand passed several times over his body setting off these beeps that just made the scanner that much more nervous. I learned later that he had a metal valve in his chest that caused the problem. After submitting him to check after check, they decided that this 81 year old with a cane wasn’t a threat to everyone’s safety. Two hours later we were on our way to Jamaica!

After clearing Customs, we emerged from the hall into the amassed throng looking for our driver. Sienna and Sala had sent Sala’s Uncle Tado to pick us up so when I saw his smiling face and a cardboard sign saying BILL , I felt so much better. The drive along the coast through Lucea was pretty uneventful until we arrived on the outskirts of Negril and it started to pour and pour!

We plowed through the flooded streets at the roundabout and headed out towards Sheffield. Several minutes later, we pulled into the property where we would be staying for the next week.

Shereth and three of her staff were playing dominoes when we arrived but Nicky, who was watching the game showed us to our rooms so we could get freshened up.

The massage therapist, Jennifer, was employed by my traveling partner to get the traveling kinks out of his body.

I put on my swimsuit and headed for the pool.

I had a great time with the children who were playing in the pool. The little girl had never been in a pool before and the mixture of glee and fear was flashing in her eyes.

I tried my best to make it an enjoyable experience and soon she was laughing and playing with the other children.

Man this place looks way cool and laid back. Love the kids in the pool, that little girl's face is priceless.

Part 3

As I am not quite ready to make the final move to Jamaica due to work committments, I agreed to allow Shereth's son Chez to live in my room. In exchange, Shereth let me use a room at the Six Love Guest House during this visit. I didn't mind one bit as the swimming pool was just outside my door.
She gave me Room #8 and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to stay there.

The rooms are modern and immaculately kept. Currently, the room price is just $25US per night with longer stays getting even better prices!

The "Double Aces Bar and Authentic Island Cuisine"part of her business was very nicely appointed.

I could see very easily that I was going to love the stay and the pampering that a small, intimate place like this would give. I decided to relax a little on this trip and spent most of the next two days swimming and reading.

Saturday would be the Grand Opening Party! I couldn't wait!

I think the place is VERY lovely. That is one of the prettiest bars I've seen in Jamaica, and the room looks VERY nice.

The only thing that surpasses the beauty of this place is the people who live and work around there! This is truly a gem in the rough.

The photos of the place you posted look exactly like The HillTop Resort - do you know if they recently changed the name to "Six Love"??

If it is the same place it is just lovely! We went there for dinner one night - and the night blooming Jasmine was indescribable. All the flowering shrubs and bushes look incredible in your photos. We have been up there several times - dinner, breakfast, a party one night. There is a wonderful rooftop area for partying. Is this the place you purchased / leased for yourself?? Lucky you!!

It's lovely! Is the pool big enough to get a good stretch? Looks like it. Shereth looks great! Definitely will call her before my next trip. About how long does it take to get to the beach?
