” …then from me, yeah, it slipped one day.
happiness, come back, i say.
'cause if you don't come, I've got to go
lookin' for happiness.
well, if you don't come, I've got to go
lookin', lord, for happiness, happiness...”
Robert Nesta Marley - I’m Hurting Inside
Day 10:
Today is the day…big bashment for Mama. Mom, not wanting to do all this cooking by herself, has hired the guy who does the jerk down at White River to jerk the chicken and pork she purchased in the market. The curry chicken is seasoned and ready to be cooked. The peas have soaked and are awaiting the rice. And of course I’m on errand duty, running all over Ochi.
The first real errand of the day is to pick up tables and chairs Mom has rented for the session. On the way out I spot this fellow eating alongside the road.
I remind myself that on my next trip I either need to purchase or build a bird feeding tray or a birdbath. I don’t see enough of these beauties flying around the house and I’m a huge fan of birds. There’s something about the ability of an animal, which having reached the decision that a change of scenery is in order, simply takes to flight, leaving the earth and its madness behind. As Maya so eloquently points out to us:
When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass
And the river flows like a stream of glass;
When the first bird sings and the first bud opes,
And the faint perfume from its chalice steals -
I know what the caged bird feels…
Mom’s house is situated across the street from Couples and from the top of the road you can just make out the private island Couples has built for nude sunbathers. I snap a pic and pray I don’t see anything I don’t want to see when I download the pics!
After picking up the chairs and tables, and setting them up, it’s off to Pimento Walk to pick up Mom’s cake. This is the same trip I made yesterday that takes me up a rather narrow road into the hills.
On the way up, and just past Evita’s, I spot what looks to be some sort of garden. The place doesn’t seem to be open for business, but I add it to the list of places I need to visit on a future trip.
Lush vegetation cradles me as I continue my climb and whenever possible I make stops to savor the beauty of the place and take pictures. I could make a feeble attempt to paint a picture of the beauty that is, inherently, Jamaica, but why don’t you see for yourself:
Re: Coming In From The Cold...an unremarkable trip report
If you’ve read this entire report, then I am sure you are probably painfully aware that I am either deeply infatuated with Napi, or at the very least I thought a lot about her on this trip. As I near the baker’s house, I spot this little gem, and I know that if she doesn’t yet have it in her collection, Napi would likely want to add this:
I grab the cake and can immediately tell that Mom won’t be pleased. I can see hints of the cake just below the surface of the icing which tells me it isn’t thick enough. To make matters worse, it doesn’t appear that they bothered to refrigerate the cake to keep the whole thing cool and further harden the icing. It’s in the mid 70’s at 0800am in Jamaica in February. By 1300, the time that I pick up the cake, it’s a legitimate 86 degrees. Prince is nowhere to be found and Moms needs the cake, so I pay the $1k and begin my descent, with a sneaking suspicion that this icing might not make it. The scenery is no less stunning on the way down:
As I near the bottom of the hill, a small clearing opens and through the power lines I can just make out the bay of Ocho Rios…
Re: Coming In From The Cold...an unremarkable trip report
I arrive home with the cake, having taken as much precaution as one can take driving in Jamaica, to get it home to Moms in one piece. As I’m turning into our gate, I spot this chap taking a look around the place:
Mom takes one look at the cake and goes ballistic! By the time the cake arrives home, all of the icing has melted. When I say all of it, I mean all of it! There’s a nice pool of icing on the bottom of the box surrounding the cake, and not a lick of icing on the cake itself. Of course she calls him up and lets him have it – but the damage is done. She’s out $1k (I tell her stop worrying about it, I paid for it and I consider it a donation to the Jamaican economy) but she’s heated and there’s no rage quite like Moms when she’s heated…
Maggie’s developed a standard operating procedure for these exact moments – she grabs a book and starts reading, while Mom continues to blast this guy over the phone…
Mom decides to make a call to aunt P.E. who will be accompanying aunt M.J. from Mobay to the party and puts in a request for “one a them cake them sell a foreign with the icing. I don’t really care what flavor it is, because nobody going to eat that – everybody will want the rum cake. That will be just so Mama has something to cut…” Back up plan activated, she proceeds to scoop up the melted icing and layer it back over the cake. The end product looks crazy – but tastes surprisingly good.

Soul Hunter - no need to search. Your soul seems to be in a good place. Your words are clear and vibrant. Your vision is penetrating. The love and respect for the women in your life is applaudable.
Not since the posting of the original trip report posted by my beautiful young ladies (Napi and Lil' Sis) have I posted to anyone's trip report. I've always had good intentions but seemed to not follow through. I never took the time to thank the surrogate Aunts and Big Sisters (Marilyn, Vi, Dr. O, Fatty B, etc.) who showed such love and concern for my daughters and for that I apologize. I truly love them for through the eyes of my children, I know them. Agape Love to you, Sisters.
As for you Soul Hunter, many have expressed their heartfelt connections with the intimacy with which you have relayed your adventure. I too have sincerely enjoyed your report. I too am a lover of the island called Jamaica - the land, her people and all she has to offer. The one picture you showed of the Enchanted Gardens running along Fern Gulley is a place at which my husband and I once stayed. It's like a luscious rainforest graciously offering all you could possibly absorb. It's been several years since we've stayed in that particular location but it was indeed wonderful and quite memorable.
So please, do continue with your report. You have our full attention and we're not letting you get away.
