Let’s Chill (Sunday)
The next morning I wake up at the crack of dawn again.



I watch a little of the Jamaican morning show, but eventually fall back asleep. When I wake up this time I get a shower and Stacy and Tonya are also up and starting their day. I want to go back across the street to Fatties to see if I can get some ackee. Tonya decides to eat her cereal and Stacy says that she will go with me. Once I walk across the street I see Strongman. I wave hi and tell him that I’ll talk to him after I gets my grub on. When we enter inside the man at the counter tells me that I’ve missed the ackee again. Shoot. Oh well, I order macaroni and saltfish and some brown stewed chicken. Stacy also gets macaroni. I purposefully left the camera at home. I didn’t feel like being bothered and just wanted to absorb the runnings. The man at the counter gets into a heated discussion with a customer about the news on TV. I still haven’t gotten my Sugar Rush. I’m usually always high energy, but after my long day yesterday I already know that today will have to be a chill type of day. After we eat our wonderful breakfast(Stacy loved the saltfish and macaroni) we head back toward the hotel. I see Strongman again and stop to chat. It was blazing hot today and he was washing his car. The sweat was just running off of him as if somebody was pouring water over his face. He got up and asked me what were my plans for the day. I said that we needed to go to the Hi-Lo and that we were going to check out Roots Bamboo tonight for the Jazz show. He asks how am I going to get to Hi-Lo and I say a route taxi. He starts talking in patois to another man outside about-what she know about a route taxi. I just rolled my eyes and told him I’d see him later. After we come back in, we head out to the balcony where we just veg for a second and decide today’s activities. The girls tell me that I plan things out too much. I can’t help it. As the jafakin tour guide, it’s my job to have a plan for the day. Also being someone’s mother I’m used to making sure that A and B get together to make C. Anyway, we talk about going to the Jungle, hearing hip-hop most of the night and watching the drunk girls dancing off rhythm. I ask them what happened to 150 and 250 after they got out the car. They have no clue. Tonya said that she was so tired, she just said good night and turned toward the hotel.

We all get motivated and go outside and get a taxi to the Hi-Lo. We stock up on everything from more chips, another bottle of rum and fruit punch. I buy a couple more little jugs of juice. That’s how I carry my private mixed drink wherever we go. After flirting (ok after I flirted) with the workers inside the grocery store we head back out to the ATM. After telling Stacy that the machine isn’t broken, it only dispenses JA dollars, we get our cash and head back to the hotel. After we unload our groceries and make some rum punch we decide to walk down to Ms. Sonia’s since we haven’t had any exercise today. DANG, it’s hot. I love people watching and feeling the sun on me, but could a sister get some occasional shade. The walk today seemed like it took forever. When we walked before, we were constantly stopping and talking to people. This was just us, in the sun, struggling and hopping to see that beacon of light in the distance-the sign that said Ms. Sonia’s patties.

I've been consoling myself with the last of a bottle of honey off my cuz's farm and some roti from an Indian place down the street! Now we get to some patty, if she wasn't at church!

Now Shug, don't think I'm coming down hard on you or anything, but I hear a few people every now and then sort of...I dunno if complain is the right word, but let's say comment...about hearing hip hop at the Jungle. Some people are downright surprised that they play anything but reggae, I guess because that is the kind of music a lot of people who come to Jamaica want to hear, which is why you see all the beach bands play the same boring *** material of regurgitated bob marley/reggae classics. Saddled between the incomprehensible magicians/firebreathers/clown shows, lol...

So let me just say with nothing but a purely conversational tone that the Jungle is a real nightclub, in Jamaica...and in clubs all over the island you will hear a lot of hip hop- the Jungle's not like one of the tourist bars on the beach- I mean sure these days a lot of tourists find their way there, and of course the club wants as many people to be inside and enjoying themselves as possible but they are not presenting themselves as anything other than a real Jamaican club if that makes sense- and now I'm not laying down a diss here, but you must understand people in Jamaica listen to more than reggae, so that is why they play hip hop there- because it is very popular and everybody wants to hear it. Plus, it is easier for people to start dancing to- you don't have to know all the special group dances, which can be intimidating to people who don't know them (and some of those gorup dances are just pure stupidness- I don't care how hot the girl you will never catch me "Scooby-Dooing" or doing the "brush yuh teet" lol) so for hip-hop you can just do your thing, even if you are like 50¢ and have no rythym to save your life, lol...You will even hear house music these days since heinekin started backing an electronic music show on the radio about...what I guess like 2 years ago now, I think.

And people are starting to love rock too.

One of the most surreal evenings I ever spent was at a go-go club up around back of Valuemaster- back in the day it was called "Compulsions." This was years ago, when I first started working in Negril. Anyway, the DJ started playing "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins. You know the jam right? "everybody get footloose" or some such sh!t like that. Well I was stunned. Felt like someone just slapped a wet fish across my face. I thought it was a goof. There was no way he was seriously playing this sh!t.

But let me tell you, people were GOING OFF to that jam.

And I kind of realized I was sort of imposing my own view of what I expected things to be like...I mean, being a DJ myself I could have thought of about 80 other songs he could have played but the question I kept asking myself was, "Self...why NOT Footloose?"

Anyway please bring some patty and don't be so hard on the Jungle DJs. Gemini, Slim, and Rusty do a really good job in my opinion.

Don't forget the pickle and limeaid!

I understand what you are saying, but I don't usually listen to that at home. If I was at a club in the States I would be bellyaching. I don't hate all hip-hop, I just like a good mix. But I agree with you. I do think that it is unrealistic to go into JA and expect only reggae or dancehall...but a girl can have her dreams [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Yeah I felt the same way when the crowd went crazy when they started playing Return of the Mack...Haven't heard that since the early 90's or when they do an oldies mix. okay so you know what I'm sayin...

Return of the Mack, lol...you're lucky you didn't get Lucky Star or Like a Virgin, two gems they dusted off awhile ago. I can understand the old MJ tunes, as those will always be ill, but man...return of the mack. Damn that's hard.

Trust me when I tell you, I've felt the Apocalypse lining up on the next turntable more than once, lol...

Worse thing for me is, one of my friends has like, one of those autosomatic responses or whatever, soon as she hears 'her song' - and there is a lot of them- she belts it out, and the poor thing can't sing worth spit, but there she is wailing away, usually in my ear since all she can do is close dance.

I tried to explain to her I already had a nice case of lifelong tinitis and didn't need any supplemental hearing loss, but alas, to no avail...

They did play Like A Virgin....I just thought it was interesting to what the crowd responded too. Don't get me wrong the Jungle was OK but (and I have such limited experience) I'd perfer Amnesia because of more dancehall(but was I really in Amnesia long enought to hear the whole playlist-opps let's back away from that last trip report, b4 someone comes over here to bash me )
