The yellow flower is a canna lily. Middle plant is Joseph coat, what folks in North America call coleus. First flower of course is hibiscus.

I did understand the St. Bess folks [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif[/img] Interestingly, once people realized they were being spoken to in standard English, for the most part they did their best to respond that way. The folks I met were great!

where exactly is the lover's leap guest house? i've travelled that route a few times . . . is it the guest house high up overlooking treasure beach and area?

it is further around from where you stayed and lovers leap is. I used to camp there every single summer and next time you plan a retreat, be sure to visit

ETA - sarry work called - so anyway when I visited Ocean View Bible Camp we hiked it down to the foot of the cliff. One one occasion I remember finding caves and before the Canadian Army took up base there, (dem still dere - to the right of the entrance????) we used to hike the caves and found some interesting things.

I am sure it has changed much and mi glad yuh cudda undastan wi inglish

There is no entrace fee to Lovers' Leap. Someone mentioned the owners scrapped that idea, and kudos to them for doing so.

I have lots more pics from Treasure Beach, YS Falls, our Black River Safari, and Little Ochee. Will update later.

Ahhh, I am glad to hear they scrapped the entrance fee... that was a big deterrant for many to go, and why I always plugged the Treasure View Hotel.. same view, no entrance cost, nice local food, owners, etc. I'll bet if I pointed it out to you, you would have recognized it on your drive down from Southfield. It stands alone. I love all of the places you refer to... very beautiful places that people have worked hard to build up [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]pretty!

I understand plans are already in the works for a return visit next year. God willing, I'll definitely put the Ocean View Bible Camp down as one of the places to check out. I had no idea there was a Canadian Army base in the area; should be interesting to see if it's still there.

Having satisfied the beach lust of those among us, we set out for our next stop. By this time I had become re-accustomed to the trials and tribulations of the roadways. It being a Friday and some school kids having to walk miles to and from school, I was more concerned for them as some of the roads had no sidewalk / walkway for pedestrian traffic. Our North American kids with school bus for transportation do not realize how fortunate they are.

We saw this guy below at a gas station stop. The car seemed clean to me, but the brother obviously wasn't satisfied. In hindsight he reminds me of one of my brothers who make it his business to wash his vehicle just about every other day. Must be a Jamaican thing...



Below, Holland Bamboo! In my teen years, my dad ran excursion tours all over the island and the times I went with him, this - along with Flat Bridge - was among the places I really liked. In the case of the latter, it was more curiosity about the lack of any kind of guard rails. It was great to see the canopy of bamboo trees still there.

YS, orginally a cane farm, with a factory, is the shortest place name in Jamaica. Back then (1887) it was about 8,000 acres but today it is about 2,300. According to information posted on a wall there, the origin of the name "YS" has been much debated. One version is that it is from the Gaelic word "wyess" meaning winding or twisting. The other version is that in 1684 a Lt. Col. Richard Scott and his partner John Yates, named the farm "YS" by combining the initials of their surnames. Cattle on the farm was branded "YS" as were the hogshead of exported sugar. Debate aside, I wasn't prepared for the wonderful spectacle that was beyond the gates.

Interestingly, there are two fees for entrance; one for locals and another for tourists [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img] After a bit of negotiation by our host, we were all admitted as locals [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70390-shhh.gif[/img]

I really loved this mural. The "notice" above advised patrons that application had been made for a liquor license.



Below, we were some distance away from the Falls so we had to ride in this thing called a jitney.



The ride was picturesque, and I put away the camera for a while just so I could enjoy it all. I found it interesting that one of the guys on the jitney had to occasionally hop off to open a couple of gates so we could go through. However, the owners of the property - in order to preserve the natural beauty - carefully monitor the number of visitors. The gates seem to be a form of control to ensure other vehicular traffic do not drive to the Falls. I thought that was very proactive, and given what I was about to see, made a lot of sense.

Unlike Dunns River Falls, YS is less crowded. This was a spectacular 7 falls waterfall surrounded by lush tropical forest with tons of space for relaxation. My first reaction when I saw it - WOW! In the harsh midday sun, it wasn't the best time to take pictures, but this was well worth it.



The water was brown because of the heavy rains which fell just about every evening we were in St. Bess.

It's funny how one moment in time can have a profound effect on us as individuals. As I stood and took this all in, from somewhere within I "heard" the words:

"O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder / Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made / I see the stars, I hear the roaring thunder / Thy power throughout the universe display.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee / How Great Thou Art..."

A moment of epiphany, I guess.
