What you need to do is check out the family history centres run by the Church of the latter day saints.

Its worth looking at the births marriages and death registers for your grandfathers name. Ifyou have a year of birth etc then even better.

You can locate your local FHC on the web.

Oh one last thing - define the objective of your search befor you go looking.

Mr.Crooks, I too have tried to trace my roots, but need to get records of marriages and births,
Is there an archive in ja that I can start with?
Is there a lot of money involve in tracing my ROOTS?

Although I have not updated my site in the last 3 months, I have now discovered a 3rd alternative spelling to my name.
An expert in English etymology/ onamastics has feels that the source of my name may be different from the ones I discovered.
I have looked at the latter day saints site briefly but will revisit.

Paul, I use the Personal Ancestry File Software available from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints site.

Which software do you recommend to keep track of key information?

Also was the Registrar General's Office in Jamaica much help to you? I see where they have a "family tree" service offered on their site.

For me it was straightforward. THey are fully computerised and have a customer focussed approach to dealing with you.

Key thing is to get yourself familiar with what's there. Recommend "Tracing WestIndian Ancestors at the Public Records office". You need to reach a certain point in your search before it becomes useful. But all the information about what you can get your hands on are there.

Alot of the JA records are filed in London also. I've heard that the staff at the Spanish Town archives can be a bit of a challenge I don't know how true that is.

My experience of obtaining records at National Library of Jamaica was a good one. I managed to order what I wanted over by email after and giving some specifics. A report arrived within 3 weeks.

Yes - go to the spanish town archives. The records I obtained re births and marriages are files there. You need to be armed with names dates parish to get the most. The more uniqure the name the better.

Paul, I have one of those names that once you have that name and you are from Jamaica, we are related. No maybes about it.

Do you think it's wise to go to the Registrar General in Spanish Town and tell them I am looking for any records they have with my name and just give them a time period to work with?
