Portia has never been Prime Minister before, her previous history being an MPP (a cog in the governance structure, as opposed to a leader). Any religious feelings she may have had and acted on as MP would have a different and likely lesser impact than those same religious feelings being acted on as Prime Minister, because the number of people and the policy playingfield would be way bigger.

i'm not sure that i've ever said that i believe in her abilities as a woman, but if i did, let me clarify: i think (thought) as a woman she would bring a different approach to politics based on her experiences as a woman (not because she has any innate abilities related to her gender).

i think history has shown that religious beliefs can have siginficant influence on how leaders lead.

Jamaica has the world record for most churches per square mile, so I am not too shocked by this development, before we judge the lady let us see what her game plan is, this could all be part of a plan to create a unifying platform for all Jamaicans regardless of class, religion seems logical in Ja. If people did not see this coming from her election speeches they were not paying attention, the lady even referred to herself as Paul Bogle several times, matter of fact several of our national heroes were some what deeply religous people...mi not running to the hills a bawl bout sky a fall just yet [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

Old wives tale. The original argument was the Maxfield Avenue had more church and Rum bars juxtaposed than any place in Jamaica. This I can say was or still is true, if someone can find the reference to our place in the world in respect to the amount of churches within a square mile I would be grateful.

Allowing this to stand true, wouldn't it render it unnecessary for any affirmative action decree to force the Minister to have clerics chair and/or be members of any board(s) they setup? Wouldn't it fairer to ensure that other voices are heard on these boards.... say Atheists?

Why shouldn't we begin to judge her? There has been no change of Government with her coming to the Prime Ministership. It is still a PNP Government only a new Administration, with the same old modus operandi. We see the same old folks a little leaner in some places but essentially the same old bus. This is more divisive than unifying because none of these pastors offered themselves for election, in fact they regularly tell their membership to stay away from politics, so why would we accept a decree that they chair boards setup by elected leaders? Would she decree that known Atheists be on these boards as well?

No one is refusing her the right to her personal convictions, but she cannot or should not impose these on other Jamaicans by decree.
In her speech (I have it taped) she talks about unity and not dealing with Jamaicans using race, class, or education. Decreeing that Pastors should chair boards is telling Jamaicans that Religion goes before any other qualifications. She is either a rank simpleton or a very cunning Anne Palmer. This is perfect 5th Term ploy.... A Grease Can Time Now.

Another dangerous angle to this is because Jamaica is so wedded to AID, she could be putting Jamaica in the firing line for Atheists and others who wish to keep religion and Government separate, especially in the USA.
I am 99% sure than some Atheist activists is busy scanning the news daily to see where the USA is sending AID and whether or not this AID may end up in Countries with Theocratic Governments. Similar to what happened to the Family Planning Programs, when the USA was forced to end it support for such programs worldwide because of pressure from the Right to Life Folks.
In fact if I was a USA Citizen I would be right to my Federal Rep right now, because I believe when religion is mixed with Governance it creates a toxic mix.

John Rollins tried the same thing after Seaga chase him out of jamaica like a dog but congress did not stop the money, and the country that gets the most US aid annually mixes religion and politics with the best of them and no one have stopped the money so I dont buy all that scary stuff. Give the woman more than 3 days before we serve her up is what I am going to do.

No it was not the same thing and you forgot to mention the other part of it. It was PJoke who gave away to Rollins prime lands for a song, (including lands zoned for environmental use) after Rollins had carried our name to the USA Congress.

John Rollins is/was and American Business Man Atheist, Right to life Folks and other activists are more organized, more methodical they don't have to lobby anyone they just take the matter to the courts.

But back to Madamn prime minister, I am adopting a wait and see approach Jamaica inspite of the crime and killings needs support, so if you supporting JA then constructive criticism is always good, where I draw the line is the mean spirited vitriol her many detractors spew without giving alternatives. I am tired of bi-partisan politics, jlp dis pnp dat, Jamaica first is what I am about.

Pastors on state boards or chairman means very little in reality, members of board of directors pass bylaws based on majority of votes, one pastor voting is making people all worried I dont get that. Jamaica gets less than US$20 milliona year from the uS,and for a number pf years there was 2 million that was not issued by the local embassy,and it possibly is still there,with none the worst for jamaica.
Look at what the US do about AID to Haiti??
I think sometimes it is better to suffer without the AID than live with ramifications.
It is better jamaica stop taking funds for family planning than to take it and teach abstenance only. As far as i am concerned that policy will only increase the AIDS situation inm any country that accept it. Only fools and those who wish no good to the country would accept it a strategy to reduce AIDS.
