Option # my hybrid solution was the ticket:

A hard install of Windows XP.
Access to your Date
Use the F10/11 Key to switch OS.

BTW which VM did he tell you to keep?
I thought VPC 07 was the only one you ever installed?

Thinking about it may not work because the PC will only support one active Partition and when you boot and try to install XP it might see the Vista Partition and decide it not to install.... but this risk is small compared to the gains if it work.

If you don’t want to list you software and Devices on the board PM me and I will take a look!

This thread is long and rambling so cherry-picking is allowed!

I have never installed a VM before until now. He just said he thought Microsoft's product was crap since it uses the technology of another VM company. I am so tired right now tha tI have completely forgotten the name of the co. he recommended....something like virtual firmware or something like that. I'd have to google the name to see if one triggers my memory. Basically which ever company first designed the technology is the one he is recommending.

There were other problems going on that without someone else looking at my system, I would not have figured out to tell you.

My Linksys wireless-G adapter was screwing up my system and causing all kinds of connectivity issues. He said it wasnt worth paying him to fix but instead he will return with a new USB wireless adapter which should interface better with Vista.

He is talking about VM-Ware it is the best virtual machine out there.
I am not knocking your Tech but he is like a few folks on BBs that like to knock everything when they don't want to spend the time and tease out the problems.
If that is all his complaint then I say it no complaint.

For obvious reasons a Microsoft VM is not going to be that strong since you are only suppose to use it to debug programs that you write to run on a Windows Platform.
Therefore they are short on drivers and optimization for Consumer Software that the average Customer might want to use in real world situations.

Of course having the handicap of not having Vista and not really reading your post re the problems I did not know that your Vista was actually unusable in some respects. I just thought you might want to use Vista but have the comfort of using XP for stuff that you are familiar with in Vista.

I will agree with him that if you are going to use this to defeat your XP problems in a Real World atmosphere then a ruggedized VM might be better.... even though VM are for Tech issues and even the best ones might be short on drivers.

I am going to bed now because I am truly falling into the keyboard but I will be happy to help you in the morrows work through these ishs. So go ahead and PM I.

He did give a more detailed and lengthy explanation as to why he did not like MS VM because he has used it in other environments, but I honestly cannot regurgitate what he said back to you

I understand how Vista works, my dislike is the level of inefficiencies it causes in my work day.

I was hoping the VM with XP would alleviate those issues<span style="font-weight: bold"> but if the same issues can be resolved on the Vista platform, I am all ears. </span>I just want to work without cussing at my screen.

and oh yes, at a $100/hr I kinda didnt want him to spend a great deal of time teasing out a problem - just make point A connect to point B quickly - so that part is on me, not him, because paying for his time is a bit hard on my pocketbook.

So I am not a Tech Professional, I am very cheap but at least I know logical progression...kinda like the time when the Best Repair Supervisor in Indianapolis used to come to my house in the evening for repair advice...he though he was getting paid and I was just delaying my dinner to accommodate him!

You are so not right for that

The thing is for me since my mortgage is paid by billable hours, spending an enormous amount of downtime trying to sort thru this on my own becomes cost ineffective rather quickly. It would be cheaper to send you a plane ticket and have you come here and fix it than me try to fumble thru on my own

Epilogue
Now that I have gotten my palms on a Vista Disc here is my conclusions:

Install Windows XP and Vista in a Ménage à trios, 3-drive affair

Or

Using Partition tragic to Partition 1 great drive into two and installing the rivals on either Partition, with a second drive as the Common Hallway for the DATA.

This is the only way to get equipment that would otherwise work under XP to work for you using Vista

So, I have saved all my passwords but I need to save my cookies to back them up. I have done a search but cant find a file that stores them anywhere.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can capture my cookies?

Never done it but it seems if you copy the Cookie Folder, save it seem where you should be able to copy it over or the contents of it in the new Cookie Folder.

What Browser are you using?
I think in IE it stored in a folder called Cookies in the My Documents/whateverUser/Temporary Internet Files. I will check in Vista and let you know.
