Curious if the diagnostic show anything wrong. I was about to say the hard drive sound like it gone and you beat me to it.

Edit: I have seen good diags with bad hard drives. Bad enough where the diags run fine, but you can't format the drive. Not even a low level format would work, but the drive test fine.

Lin, I did run a diagnostic and the error msg said I had a verification failure. That was the point when the IT guy said it is toast.

Yeah it gone wid dat error. In a nutshell, the system try to write someting to the drive, den verify what it write and it failed during that step. Multiple causes for it.

I should have the new HD by Wednesday from Lenovo. Thank God I dont store much data on my laptop but I will lose a bit if my IT guy cant restore my old one.

I still like the system better than a Dell though.

just got in the door.....I dont know if I am gonna take it to the IT guy and have him recover anything. Too damn expensive right now.

I loaded the laptop myself when I first purchased it, so I can do that again with no trouble. If it looks like I need some data files off the laptop then I will get them to recover stuff. The only thing I am sad to lose is all my downloaded TV shows

I am not paying 85/hour right now if I can do most of it myself. I'll play it by ear and see if I want any of the other files recovered. I use my desktop as a "server" so the majority of my files are located there anyways.

I put in the rescue and recovery disk cause the instructions say I can save files before I re-install everything...I kept the old HD in and the rescue and recovery menu wont come up. But if I put in the new HD it comes up.

Does this just mean that I cant recover anything (myself) from the old HD, or am I understanding the concept of rescue n recovery all wrong?

To me, why would I need to recover anything with the new HD in place?

Should I even try to bother with this step and just skip to doing the product install and give the old HD to my IT guy and he recovers the files for me?

Recovery is referring to your OS system files, not your data files. Also, the computer does not react to the OLD hard drive, because it is having problems detecting di drive because, it is bad/going bad. Just start your re-install with the new hard drive. If you had Ghost the OS 9C-drive) you would have had less work to do.
