I have a file cabinet where i tried to put the router up on but b/c of how they ran the cable stuff thru the adjoining wall, I cant get my router up that high.

It's hard to explain the wiring - so I think I will hit the stores tomorrow and look for the extender anyways.

u dun knoe Cisco sets the standard..

mine will work for the most part in my bedroom. It just that I hit dead spots if I shift myself around and have to reconnect.

But if I sit outside on my deck I have signal trouble. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

I'll go shopping tomorrow for new gear cause I'm too high maintenance to put up with dead spots [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

I bought a D-Link wireless extender and I'm having trouble removing the antenna from the back of my Netgear router.....I'm afraid to pull on it too hard incase I damage the thing.

I know you said that the brands dont have to match but I'm wondering whether this is a problem cause my Netgear router is about 5 years old.

What do you think?

my router went down a month ago
i futz and futzed over it and still couldn't get it back up
finally i called the vendor - Linksys
back on line within 30 minutes

Well, most of them unscrew. How the rhyme go? Direction Righty tighty, lefty loosey. But I have a question...The extender is usually a box by itself, sometimes it is in a pair. What did you get? The box (one or two) or the set of antennas? If you have a link to the extender you got, that would be helpful. Also the model number of the router.

Place a piece of cardboard between the antennae and the back of the computer to make sure the spray does not get inside. Then
Spray a little WD40 or some other penetrating fluid/Fe02 reducer and give it a little time like an hour or so,then spray silicon rust inhibitor on the new one you are repplacing it with.
there is a possibillity that the location it is in has higher than normal humidity that caused it to rust in the threads.
LThe new one has to be csrewed inthe stub of th eold. So the old one has to be removed. Don't worry thus way you won't damage anything

I found the netgear model specific manual on their website, but it isn't exactly clear if the antenna can be removed, but yet one of the lines in the manual says "Ensure the antenna is tight and pointing straight up." The website shows other models with a separate antenna connection. Maybe you can see if their tech support will answer that question for free. Googling the model number + antenna seems to confirm that the antenna is NOT removable though.

Based on the info I found on the Dlink antenna, it does require an actual connection to the unit, so if the router antenna can't be removed, then it will not work. Interesting thing. I can find the antenna connector type listed in the specifications for other routers, but the Netgear specs doesn't list it at all, so that seems to confirm that it cannot be removed. In that case, you will need to look at a repeater type extender, like this one...
