OHHH Nancee, so this is a Jamaican treat? HA, no wonder I haven't had it. I don't do coconut either so that splains, and sweets are not much of my vocabulary. I thought it was an east coast thing or something.

Yep, I always carried fixins for full blown Mexican meals. Cooked plenty of them on Uncle Sam's fire and fed everyone in the yard. They all loved it, and if it wasn't for me bringing it to my friends at Sams, they never would have had my Mexican delicacies. I used to bring down Native American goods stuffs too...such as lake grown Minnesota Wild Rice, and I'd sometimes cook up a big pot of all day long Italian spaghetti. I remember the first time I cooked the spaghetti noodles over the wood fire. I was a little nervous!

Laugh all you want laurel. It was all appreciated by everyone in the yard and there was loads of interest.

Evelin peeps! Goot may hair cut on the way home from work and the blonde is gone! I am totally au naturalle now and it really looks nice and healthy and DARK!!!
well, cept for that big honkin white streak...

I've got my Bonnie Raitt streak goin on, but this time of year it isn't very noticeable because of the highlights from the sun.

Good morning everyone!

Oh QK - I bet it looks nice....come with a pic. now! I've been thinking about chopping off my hair too....but it's easy to just pin up....so many more options when it's little longer. Maye after me get back into my slender pants I will get a new do too! lol.

I baked some loaves of banana nut bread, lemon poppyseed loaf, and some fruitcake and took to my kids in Ja Ja....so much easier than baking it there. It traveled good in my back pack and they loved it. I've taken all kinds of food there too Nooks. Dem do love to try new things....we made pizza and now we are buying it cause it's just too much trouble to make. Hammonds Pastry shop in Sav has a killer pizza.....best I've ever had.

Good morning Schultz and Annshan and everyone!!!

Do I look excited? That's cause I AM! It's actually gonna be nice today for the first time in weeks! I can mow and put up my little shade house that blew down in 50 mph winds. But first I'll spend a couple of hours finishing my BIG necklace while I wait for the grass to dry. The grass is so long it's still gonna look like hell after I mow but it's rained for 3 weeks so I couldn't do anything about it.

Oh schultz, yes Pizza...I never made pizza. That would have been big fun but i did my cooking over the wood fire and I was worried enough about my spaghetti noodles, lol. You just reminded me of the nights I spent baking before leaving in the morning. I'd bake dozens of cookies to share as well.

Oh yipee skippy, I'm just so excited about a nice day you'd never know...

Marnin QK! I'll shoot the necklace once I finish it. I've decided to enter a different one in the fair though. The big one is now too valuable to leave there! I think I will take the advice of my good friend an enter a starfish piece. If something happens to it, I wouldn't be a devastated as I would if this one would disappear!

'Extreme Makeover' marches into Northland</span>

They're here. The cast and crew of the popular home remodeling television show arrived in <span style="font-style: italic">MY ZIP CODE&quot;</span> on Monday ready to transform a family's rundown house.

A tour bus followed by a procession of construction equipment pulled up in front of a dilapidated rural home in Wisconsin’s <span style="font-style: italic">MY ZIP CODE</span> Township on Monday morning, radically changing the course of one family’s life.

Some 50 professional building contractors were on the scene to volunteer their services as “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” aims to transform a house that’s home to Howard and Jessica Huber and their two children: Rosemary, age 3, and Henry, 6.

he Hubers bought an old farmhouse on Swamp Road about five years ago in hopes of fixing it up. But their dream soon soured.

“When I started the first major home project, it opened a Pandora’s box of problems,” Howie Huber said. “It pretty quickly became clear that it was going to be a losing battle.”

But the Hubers have newfound optimism now that a cavalry of help has arrived.

Next week, the family will receive the keys to a new home, thanks to a volunteer effort scheduled to be broadcast in December on WDIO-TV Channels 10&amp;13.

Local organizers have recruited hundreds of volunteers from the Duluth-Superior area to help Builders Commonwealth, a Duluth construction cooperative, build a new 2,300-square-foot home on the Hubers’ land in narrow span of about 100 hours this week.

The family

Howie Huber began his firefighting career working with Cleveland Township Volunteer Fire Department. Bur four years ago, he was hired on by the Superior Fire Department.

“He’s a quiet guy but a hard worker,” said Superior Fire Chief Jim Rigstad of Huber. “He’s taken on extra duties, and when he focuses on something, you know it’s going to get done.”

Huber was part of a team of firefighters to receive commendations in 2007 for their role in helping seven people escape from the second-floor windows of an apartment building fire that easily could have turned deadly.

Jessica, known as “Jessie” throughout the community, has been working this summer as a teacher’s aide at Northwestern Elementary School in Maple.

She’s also attending classes in hopes of becoming a nurse.

“She has a great rapport with families and staff,” said Nicky Wilson, family services coordinator. “She cares about people and cares about families. Jessie also clearly cares about how families are supported in Douglas County.”

“I feel we were all put on this earth to help each other out. That’s the way I try to live my life,” said Jessie.

The house

The Hubers’ old farmhouse is in need of significant repairs.

“The septic system is blown, and there’s sewage coming up in the back yard. Plus, the roof leaks everywhere,” said Thad Whitesell, president of Builders Commonwealth.

Whitesell said the home’s foundation is failing, and recently, its chimney collapsed. Other issues include inadequate insulation, a leaky fuel oil tank and faulty electrical wiring.

“They pulled the electrical box, and some of the lumber behind it was charred,” said Whitesell.

Huber said he’s well aware of the fire risks associated with substandard wiring and has lived in constant fear of endangering his family because he lacked the financial wherewithal to bring their home up to snuff.

Show producers said five Northland families were in the running to be selected. They have not revealed the identities of any other candidate families but said those not picked will be thrown back into the hat for future consideration.
