Someone we all know had these white people from somewhere in the US completely snowed. He told them he needed a hernea operation. These people were in Negril visiting when I was and we all ended up staying at Rooms on the Beach. The people had put said person up in a room there for like 8 days so he could be near them and travel around with them.

One morning these folks told me so proudly that they had paid for &quot;their BOYS&quot; hernea operation.

Later on that day, I cornered &quot;our boy&quot; , and asked to see his scar. What scar? The one from the hernea operation your folks paid for.

He smiled and walked away.

Meeeerilyn know what time it is.

Got a call from Jamaica this morning 7:12 AM, same number, but they hung up after two rings. I think he was making his morning rounds and then remembered he had already called me the day before and the answer was NO

gee, I'm feeling left out here. Nobody has ever called me asking for money. I've been begged on the streets of Sav and the beaches of Negril but the answer...unless they were limping or missing a limb or were blind or something, is NO. hell, buy em a drink and try to get rid of them! I saw that coming so my answer was always NO. I'd tell em if I wanted to buy them a drink they wouldn't have to ask. If they asked for money for food I would NEVER give it to them! Instead, I would offer to buy them food. Often I would get cussed as they walked away. They no want food money but just money period!

There WAS one time I visited a friends yard in Jamaica where she had a house in one corner. The MIL was there and I was happy to meet her until she said &quot;what you bring me&quot;. My answer was &quot;My lovely presence!&quot;. She never asked me for a thing after that but let me tell you all something...

There was quite the racket goin on in that yard! Anyone who thinks that because they have been in country and met the relatives so it must be true love?

Not necessarily so!

there was the brother that had a wife from Germany and a girlfriend from the states. One built him a house and the other bought him a car. neither one knew about the other till one day...the one from the states found his extra cell phone and peeked. Then she called the one in Germany!

The MOTHER was the one that was upset cause it was the German one who did extra things for her!

The sister had quite the nice block house built for her by her husband from the US. And a nice car too. But she has a Jamaican man on the side for when the American was gone.

what do they ALL have in common? The were all also calling the &quot;significant others&quot; with stories for money, all the time and getting it. There was no incentive for any of them to go find real jobs.

Oh and there ARE jobs. Like Uncle Sam used to say...everybody want a job but nobody want to work. he had a hell of a time finding real working people. The ambitious ones were pretty much in Negril creeping for girlfriends or looking work in Negril so it would be easier to snag one.

yes we are perceived we are rich by the mere fact that we can afford a ticket to go, a place to stay when we land and food to eat and drink to drink.


Somewhere..either trip report section or here this week...someone said it is how you carry yourself in yard is how you will be perceived. Walk around like you have any money and you will get asked to part with some.

I used to go often enough to see the different guys with the different girlfriends coming and going. One would leave ad the next one would come. All of them were sending money.

The thing is...to send the money even ONCE, feeds into the success rate so much so that it makes it hard to ANY tourist to be in some places. It ain't just the phone where the begging is happening. It usually begins in person first.
