My family was in Negril the first week in September and I heard a very similar story to Marilyn's call from a man we met on the beach. He didn't ask us for cash, but during conversation he showed me what looked like a police report from the incident. So while there is no reason for him to expect someone else to cover his losses, I think it was the same person and that there was some truth to the story.

We did spend most of the day with his little girl, who is a sweetie. It seemed a bit odd to me that he left her with us while he did some selling since he did not know us, although he did come back with food for her a few times. He asked us to bring her down some clothes on our next visit.

I will bring some things down in case we see them again, but I'll keep my phone # to myself.

Seveen and Marilyn this is pure craziness. The sad thing is that this stuff doesn't just happen with Jamaican men...men in America do the same crazy stuff...it's just more concentrated here because of the forum.

Tricks in trade but matches box in business. Yuh have some people who woulda tief the milk outta coffee and the white offa rice if yuh nuh know yuhself or aware of certain tings wah a gwaan outta road.

Mi get a call the other morning fi seh mi win money from Canada and you guessed it, mi need fi send up some money in order to claim this prize. When mi listen good, the person on the other end of the line had a strong African continent sounding accent and he said he was in Canada. It look like seh him neva do fi him research or get the memo 'bout who fah number him a call because unnu know me give it to him bill and receipt, wholesale and retail! Mi all give it to him street and lane, nook and cranny!

Mi deh deh a quiz di man fi find out a wah him really a deal wid because mi always hear people seh dem get these scam calls but a di first it a happen to me, so I was rather flabbegasted by it. Anyway, him tell mi seh mi need fi send up C$5,000 in order to claim the prize by which time mi ignorant and dark til mi buck. Mi seh alrite Mr D hear wah mi want u fi do fi mi, yuh see di money weh u seh mi win, tek wah me fi send out of it, send some go Afghanistan and some come a Bustamante Children's Hospital a Jamaica and the balance mi tell him seh fi find somewhere in his mother's southerly regions fi put it.

But it led me to thinking about persons who have been scammed and to ask the questions, are we truly scam proof? People who get scammed are they gullible or are they greedy? Based on my assessment, most persons are of the view that the latter motivates people and heighten their susceptability to being scammed. There are those people who allow their desire for more money and sometimes quick money to alter their judgment, logic and sensibility.

Even when all the signs are not adding up and are pointing to a scam dem still go down the path of deception. People call dem from all over di universe and gas up dem head seh dem win dis and dat, when dem well know seh they haven't bought any ticket which would give them a chance.

Like a woman weh come from England wid har how much thousand pounds, meet a man at a fast food restaurant and decide to change some dollas fi di man like she a cambio chu him tell her seh the cambio weh him normally use lock. Now dis woman don't know the man from Adam's and jump gone change money like a claffy, try know seh a counterfeit money she end up wid and di man gone wid fi her real real pound dem!

There is a stereotypical misconception that scammers are ugly, unattractive, rogue-looking black men and that concept is so wrong and that's why many people are victimised. It is also a misconception that only men are con-artist. Yuh have some nice-looking, shape good,&quot;up deh&quot; women who will all tief out yuh eye dem outta yuh head and yuh haffi beg dem back a borrows off a dem. Young, old, middle-age, black, white, pink dem come inna many disguises.

Like a friend of mine deh pon a plaza and a well dressed and polished senior citizen approached her for a favour. He said he was a returning resident and wanted to buy a house, however, he could not because he didn't have a bank account at the institution he wanted to do business with. He showed her a black scandal bag full a money and asked her if she could please lodge it to her account for him but just put his name pon her account as well. A man who I assume was his accomplice come and a tout her fi help him and a seh him woulda help if he had an account. Mi friend seh she just give him a pill seh she soon come back and all now him nuh see back her shadow. Mi tell her seh she lucky cause if she did ever do it, she woulda go back to di bank an see $0.00 in deh!

We must be very vigilant and aware of what is going on around us and not to let down our guard so people can just run een so. I believe no one is truly scam proof because annu just people outta road can scam yuh, there are those with knowledge in certain professions that can scam people as well by capitalising on their ignorance. We just have to try and mek sure seh we ask the relevant questions and even questions that may seem stupid on the surface. Ask them if in doubt same way and anything that looks too fishy is probably a shark so jus run!

Why bring the little girl something?

This is the seed from whence it all begins.

There's clothing aplenty in JA.

Why not spend a day at the beach together - a cook out - a tour together of a site none of you have been to ...

If one MUST succumb to the need give something with or of
a monetary value, pay a school fee for a term - that'll sure as heck go a long way further than clothing which will be outgrown in 2, 2s.

There many ways to express feelings for friends without gifting money or property.

Not to ridicule or pick at you in particular Arastacat, just expounding on this topic.

i don't take things to jamaica for people

my son made some really good friends when we stayed for a month

every morning the little boy down the lane was sitting on our verandah when i opened the door - i gave him breakfast every day - soon his older brother was there with him - i gave them breakfast every day - finally baby girl arrived - breakfast and snacks were provided every day

when we left - my son gave them all his summer clothes

when we go now - i usually invite them for a day at the beach - feed them all day - love them up - give their mom a small cash token

they thank me and have never called asking for anything!

Why? Because I have two older girls and can bring down clothes that they have outgrown. Is that wrong? I did offer to bring down swimmies for her as she didn't feel very secure with the tube she had. I wasn't sure if they were available on island. Her Dad suggested the clothing. I donate all our outgrown clothes anyway, I didn't think it would be a big deal to bring the nicest/newer things down.

We did spend most of our last day playing with /watching her.
