but Jamaica is no longer a luxury vacation...ongle some properties continue the illusion by being exclusionary....even wid the recent Smirnoff ting, they conceded dat resident Jcans an returning Jcans filled the properties in Negril wid the odd foreigners, for that event...even Sandals admitted that it got some of the bizniz which is not the norm for them with this sort of event....
Jcan tourism is a paradox of sorts...
there is nothing luxurious about a visit to Ja ....had to caution my seatmates flying in dat drugs were illegal...that is all the guy wanted to do while there n seemed to be under the impression that it was alright to indulge and in the open...
n they were apparently intelligent people...juss came wid nuff wrong ideas about wat was wat in Jamaican tourism...sad but trueComment

That hillside is really shocking!! But the same thing is happening in Ghana. So many ppl are still burning charcoal fi cook. Part of the reason is that the gas supply is very unreliable - does the same thing apply to JA? I keep an xtra cylinder of gas these days in case there's none when I run out. Gas is actually cheaper than charcoal - but then wood is free if you cut down the tree in your yard, which is what a lot of ppl here do.

You'd think that smaddy who can afford to go on vacation these days would be smart enough to get the latest tourist guides and bone up on what's going down re laws, regulations, etc. I find tis very surprising!
Thanks for contuing your terrific account complete with personal commentary - it's totally fascinating for all of us.
Try to stay off the ankle, Sis, aldoe I know it's not easy if you have to do everything for yourself. I sure hope it's all better soon and you feel like BRAND NEW!

Sis Peaches, gas is there for those who can afford it...electricity is there for those who can afford it...the issue is affordability...even wid two earners in a family , it is still a decision as to wich bill is to be paid...of course that is fi those who pay taxes..the subculture in Ja where liquidity is alive an well no seem fi ha dem decisions...well maybe fi di light etc..cause tv haffi run n music haffi pay
the light company has divested again wid di KOREANS buying majority share...
but even among the middle class, breaks r taken..a one wi build up a coal fire fi roast breadfruit etc especially if land deh around dem house...u haffi realise dat the money makers, Jcan n non Jcan dont have dem primary residence in Ja
case in point the rumour that is rampant re the govament minister who had to fly him baby off di island fi medical care, dat him buy expensive house in Fl where wife an bambino supposedly dwell
walking tru Mandeville market an wanting to buy at will, i was cautioned re my choosing tings like callaloo, fruit etc...u juss dont know how dem get dem water suppy n under wat conditions some tings r grown
but i was bolstered by the goodwill ( i prefer to tek it as being dat) of workers in MoBay crafts market, who realising dat is long time my skin no see dat much sun, an offered often and across di board to go n get mi a cold drink...dat part of some Jcans remain but i wonder how they manage wen there is no one walking thru the market and the crafts are all the same...found a chap who does magnificent carvings...really fabulous work fi an untutored carver...i have some pictures somewhere

In Ghana it's called 'the Informal Economy' - the hawkers, street-food sellers, shoeshiners, drinking-water vendors, etc. They seems able to survive somehow and some even do very well. But their 'lifestyle' is nothing like the one I'm used to!
The electricity is still a public utility here, thank God - but it has a certain autonomy from the government and its price hikes are subject to government review, but it IS quite expensive because recently a lot of it is produced from fossil fuels, which is idiotic in a place as sunny as this one.

This is one difference.....most Ghanaians who go abroad to 'greener pastures' don't come back for any significant length of time until they retire and build their 'dream home'

Food is becoming very expensive here too and it'sa bit frightening to those of us living on Canadian pensions because inflation is so much higher here.......

Fi real.it's the 'little people' who seem best able to keep their heads and remain cheerful about Life, especially the Rastas who don't buy into the 'normal' vision of the runnings. We thank God for them and their benificent nature. They help to keep ppl sane.

The concern here is that there's no proper sanitation in a lot of places and the rivers and streams become very polluted and if your lettuce grows there next to the banks or the water is used for irrigation - WELL!!!
But other ppl claim the lettuce doen'st take up anything unsavoury.
As for me - I choose carefully where I buy it.

yep the concern is all to so wid sanitation...unfortunately not all Jcans r as upright as u would like dem to be...an u can see wid the many reports coming out of Mandeville dat dere is a real problem there....
the market itself could do wid some work an u haffi gi props to peeps who continue to ply dem wares under such conditions...matter of fact i have a real problem wid how food is stored in Jamaica even in some of the supposed swank supermarkets...
temperatures no seem kosher to me in supermarkets and in open markets, welllllll....widdout the block ice dat peeps use fi get n use, n i would think the cost factor, i wonder how 'fresh' r some of the perishables dat need ice to kip dem safe
speaking of water, i could not help but think dat whoeva ha di contract to supply dem huge plastic tanks dat everybody seem to have, dat dat smaddy mekking a fortune...
but den it is not hard to be a millionaire in Ja dese days given the depreciated dollar...couple dat wid peeps tekking advantage of peeps an u can get di picture....
seeing Missa Chin in some outlying areas n tinking dat is a long time Missa Chin n giving him props fi having stuck it out, ongle to find out is a newly arrived Missa Chin n his attiude and manner is far from di earlier arrivals....den u haffi put dis new Missa Chin in check n mek him realise dat the world no level,
mek u realise the divide between u the visiting an dose who haffi live deh...
is sad in soo many ways....Ja continues wid di social divides and it is hard to see people having to put up wid to juss mek a money which at the end of the day is sooo short wen put up against dem needsComment

problem wid getting to mi pictures
so mi email dem to miself and trying to open den an save to mi computer so mi can upload to photobucket...most not opening..asking if mi want to 'zip' dem or some such
wen mi try to upload the videos, dem not 'tekking'...
wanted to share the setup one soooo badly....and part of the one of me an di man bucking up eena di bush n both of us being scared /surprised
