My walk continues slowly. Not used to seeing so many people on the beach. Good for business, but hard looking at so many empty faces and segregated parties of two or more.



Not many area families out today which is what I love to see. Children splishing and splashing, screaming and shouting. Not to mention the laughter. That’s what I would love to see today.

Taking this stroll via memory is just as painful as the literal one. Even the beautiful colors aren't so cheery when you so far away from them.

I glance at the water, then the sand, then whatever may be going on to my left. I walked leisurely, at my own pace, undisturbed. Every few steps, I would stop and stand in the shade. Not necessarily to get out of the sun because although it was bright, it wasn’t real intense. I would stand to savor a particular view. To watch the movement of the ocean as it pushes and pulls the sand. If I lived here, I know I would never get tired of these scenes.

I get to an area that shocked me. The beach erosion in front of the Whistling Bird cannot not be ignored. It broke my heart when I saw it.

Back to NBCC. I decide to spend the rest of the afternoon on the beach. The sun is still out so I find a space under a tree next to the guard. Music on, dark glasses covering my eyes, sunblock applied and journal in hand. Journal in hand. I’ve been writing in my journal everyday. It’s my treasure at this point. Full of 2008 beginnings.

Sammy sent me this beautiful keepsake almost a year ago. This is the fourth one she has gifted me with. I love the clasp on this one. I didn’t write in it until I was alone. I didn’t want the ladies to think I was chronicling their every move, so I waited until I was away from them before I wrote. Like at 3:00 AM when I’m in my room and can’t sleep. Or when I was snug on a beach lounge facing the ocean. I wrote and wrote.

Time didn’t allow for one. I longed to sail as I sat watching a small group loading up in Captain Bill’s boat. He came over to hail me for a minute. Asked me if I wanted to tag along. I knew I would break down at some point so I passed. He told me we will talk longer when he gets back.

Torrie – beachguard. Lawd the bwoy can talk!

A couple of beach singers were passing by. This guy wanted to hear them sing. They gave him a price and he immediately said no. They began to walk on. He changed his mind and gave them a price for two songs. They broke out the first tune, then the next.











I stood for two songs. When they were about to start the third, I dropped a few dollars in their bucket and got out of the sun. My shoulder felt like two lit tiki torches.
