which reminds me....can't be a coincidence that this subject came up twice today. they have been planting seeds(?) from this tree all over the world
someone asked me which park in Amsterdam they had planted it in....and then I saw an article in a magazine about it....the tree that Anne looked out on in the back garden of her hiding place for 
how long were they there? 4 years? oh the sound is great! The birds.....and you can hear the church bells and the little carillon they play which is SO Amsterdam centrum.....

this woman was amazing, miep gies, she is the one who salvaged Anne's diary and gave it to her father Otto. She died last year at the grand ole age of 100! What a life she must have had....she was awarded the highest honour - Yad Vashem prize, or whatever they call it - in Israel.

(that place behind is called a "fietsflat", i.e. bicycle appartment. OMG, where did I park my bike?!!

some lovely photos of in town now, just outside the central station, the red light general area. You see, it ain't half as spooky as any other red light area in the world. Here, people live, work - lol, not only in that field - hang out.....needless to say, they are repaving the road (no cars can get down there)...

this is also our little china town, if you go into one of these shops, I swear, you would think you were in China or the Far East anyway, nothing is in Dutch, not the labels, the talk or the people.....it's great, cos an Indonesian friend took me in cos she needed supplies, and explained a lot of the obscure stuff, that makes me say, what the hell is that?!!
I like it that there were the usual lost and confused tourists hanging out in front...

the buddhist temple, a temple to Kwan Yin
this street is one of the oldest in Amsterdam, going back to maybe 12 something.....there is a pub there with a name with monkey in it, apparently a sailor left a monkey as part of payment.....don't know when that was....
it's a lovely street, used to be a junkie hang-out but they cleaned it up, and it's full of shops, bars and restaurants now. I know someone who grew up there, and she told me her mum died when she was 18 and the whole street kind of took care of her, the butcher when she went in there, etc. making sure she was o.k. Yes, Amsterdammers are very solidair. And have a great sense of humour.

this is deep red light district here, on each side of the street are red lights..
Have been dancing in Bugatti, with a hot cuban
even met the madame of all the girls around.....she invited me to visit her in D.R. - think I'll pass, thanks....

this is nieuwmarkt, (new market), square surrounded by cafes, coffeeshops and restaurants, like a great thai one. And they have a lovely market on sundays too. all antique type stuff. there's some nice jazz clubs around, like Cafe Cuba and the Cotton Club.
The old tower thing is one of the old town wall entrances, now a cafe with a terrace.

a cheese stall on the square, they do have a few stalls there every day, like a greengrocer etc.
struck me how many tourists in town at the moment, well, easter is always the start of the major tourist season, and there are easter holidays on in europe - except here - at the moment, lots of families with kids and groups of french and italian teenagers hunting out coffeeshops

This is Oude Kerksplein, right in the middle of red light district. That is a church, quite a nice thought that it all takes place under the watchful eye.....
There's a couple of cafe terraces there, so you can sit down, relax and watch the world go by. What a laugh to see the guys coming out of a door....hey! I know you!! (joking, but imagine! seeing your boss, boyfriend, grandad 
coming out of one of those.... )

When it's hot, the girls all stand outside their door, checking out the men walking past, and asking them in. Of course you can't take photos of them, so managed to get a surreptitious one in, see her standing in the window? Wearing their lingerie....

this is (that) Dam Square, that's the royal palace wrapped up in sheets, being renovated of course. I hope Trix is paying her own bills!! She's goddam rich enough!! But bet it's our taxes instead....
the church to the side is Nieuwe Kerk - new church - they have exhibitions on there, like now, Oman.
Always stuff going on on the square, living statues, music, etc.
