Ta, luv, as they would say in London.....

Was just thinking about this great video they made in reaction to what they were spewing on Fox news about this lovely city
but then I came across this one, OMG, I used to hang out in both these places, Easy Times and Gigi (both closed down now cos the floors needed complete restructering....)
Easy Times has now reopened (must check if Gigi has) I heard from one of the bar guys I ran into recently, but is run by Morrocans now. Complete different piece of cake.
They were great, Easy Times would turn into a dance club on Friday and Saturday nights, they only ever play reggae
It was always busy too on reggae nights in Milky Way or Paradiso (Burning Spear in August! ) before and after the show.

Oh yea, it's not in the red light district at all, but on Prinsengracht near Leidseplein, just off Leidsestraat, where the trams go thru from CS.

Anyway, to get back to here I found this nice little video of the roots festival. And reminds me of 2 7's splash, the annual reggae festival on 7 july. Have to upload more photos....

More nice videos below so you can enjoy roots festival virtually Nice to see the salsa demonstration by Extremos, I always miss it cos it's on so early in the day (the festival is from 12.00 - 19.00 or 20.00, 7 or 8 pm.).

kids larking about on a rowing boat. Kids learn to swim pretty young here, 4, 5 or 6. They have to! All that water around in this country. Like they said, we are under sea level....

Thanks! I hope for you you make it. Great to combine with more places in Europe, like Paris, Rome etc. You also have these interrailing tickets for Europe. My neice has been several times with about 4 friends, all over Europe, including Eastern Europe. You can go so far as Morocco and Turkey and Scandinavia of course.
Summer is definately the best time to visit. That's also when the festivals are on. Roots Festival by the way is free paid by the council, well our taxes of course, but couldn't think of a better way to spend it!!

One great thing about it is the huge market, selling all kinds of exotic bric-a-brac. Have gotten some great stuff there! And so interesting, on the video you can see the Tuareg, they are there every year. LOL one reviewer wrote &quot;You almost expect them to stride out of the park on their camels at the end of the day, into the sunset&quot;........
I met a lovely Masai woman there with a stall, lives outside the city.
This was a Jamaican stall from a JA man and Dutch girl, they live in the south of Holland.

The capoeiristas come out too. These guys are always around doing capoeira in town, on Leidseplein, and Central Station square, on the beach in the summer. This is not the only group either. Always great to watch, so graceful.

Amadou and Miriam, the blind couple from Mali, great music were top of the bill that year, 2008. They've been going for years (they met each other in the blind institute in Bamako) cos they were already big in Mali when I went in 1989, it's only when Manu Chao made a record - Dimanche a Bamako - (produced) with them, they got known here and USA. I think they won best African or World award from BBC or something....

I like this one because it shows the stained glass windows really well in Paradiso which used to be a church and is now known as the Rock Temple
Many great concerts here and in Milky Way, both just off the Leidseplein, seen loads of reggae.
Of course they love to come and do a concert in Amsterdam, the air during it is thick with marijuana
And they can smoke without paranoia

I actually met Jacob Miller after the Inner Circle concert at the door going out, and had a lovely chat, couple of years before he died Yes, we are going back years!!
Also met IJahman at the Melkweg , it was my american friend who started talking to him at the bar after the concert. What a sweetheart!!
That's so great here, all so small scale....like I said, Global Village - Magisch Centrum!

Oh yea, that's Buena Vista Social Club concert, that was great!!

great thing is you can go upstairs. There's 2 floors. Also another smaller concert hall and a bar. And you can sit up there both floors on the balconies to watch the main concert. Milky Way is even better, they have two concert halls, a theatre, cinema, restaurant, two bars, galerie - great photo exhibitions - and a tea room (quiet, no music)....
