Roots Open Air, Sunday afternoon, the weather is always great!!
have volunteered sometimes, it's great!
This festival seeks out and presents new forms and new acts within the massive range that world music offers. Fans can sample the great variety and richness of music from around the globe, absorbing and learning from other cultures. Concerts take place at several venues and a key element of the festival is Roots Open Air, a free concert which takes place on the first Sunday of the festival week. Five different stages are set up in the park to deliver a vibrant and varied musical mix. One stage features performances especially for children. In two big tents, Club Stage and Zap City showcase well-known international artists.
don't know who this guy is, was not a famous band or anything. Agh, Africa.....
The woman who runs the only snack bar in the park is great! A friend. She has projects in The Gambia, (where her husband is from) - footballing/schooling/vitamins for the kids, she just goes to Ajax football club and gets them to sponsor, etc.
She always organises a djembe jam session on that day. Great feeling of solidarity, music does that to you.
Ah....before Roots, only 5 odd-weeks to go, we have Queen's Day, the day when the whole land becomes one big street party!!
(anyone planning to go to Holland, do NOT arrive on 30th April!!!)............
Apart from the music everywhere, it is also a free market (or do your thing), the only day anyone can sell anything (legal) on the street (except food, still need a permit for that). It started out as a kids thing, now it's a free for all.
One great thing is that Vondelpark is still kids-zone only.
This brave little girl is showing off her violin skills
As you can see, lots of people get dressed in orange - OMG, wait till you see the world cup in South Africa.... -
and the atmosphere is always good, everyone happy, - not a bolody wonder, a day off to party AND you get paid for it!! one of 10 paid public holidays, like Xmas day etc. per year.....the weather is usually good too....
Here are the Senegalese guys taking a break from the drumming, check the beautiful Baye Fall clothes - the multicoloured material, just patches sewn together, you see them in groups chanting and begging - but the begging is because they spend the whole day in praise of God, so no time to work! - in Dakar, kind of like the saddhus of India...
the guy on the right is from Guadeloupe.

always fun to combine two of my favorite things!

Oh yea!
The great thing is they now have a bus going to Keukenhof - about an hour? did it two years ago with me two bestest friends from school in inglan - from the airport!
Nice journey too, thru the cloggie countryside. Flat as a pancake....
And the airport has the train station right on site! Only 10 mins to Central Station Amsterdam and every 15 minutes! Like I said, the public transport is great and well organised here!
Only a short walk to any coffeshop once you get out of the station!
