At breakfast, the innkeeper checked the weather forecast. Looks like more snow expected until Tuesday in Yosemite. She helped us with a map and showed us all the great viewpoints in Yosemite. I explained the purpose of our visit and that we need to get to a sequoia grove to scatter the ashes. As it turns out, Mariposa Sequoia Grove is not far from the inn. We decided to do what we need to do today. The innkeeper loaned us three pairs of snowshoes (the snow was already about one foot in the park).
We headed out in the SUV. The grove as not far from the entrance. We chatted to the park rangers, paid our $20 for a one-week pass, answering "yes" when they asked if we have tire chains . They told us the road to the sequoia grove was closed but we could hike it if we'd like as it was only two miles up a hill.
My sons thought this was way cool and I was all for it. At the innkeeper's recommendation, the boys had picked up sandwiches and water from a nearby country store. They backed them in their backpacks.
Peas1 carried his dad's ashes in his backpack. The container weighs 10 lbs. Peas2 carried the food and water. I followed them with car keys and ID
The two-mile trail to the grove was up hill and we were the first to walk on the new snow. We were using snow shoes for the first time in our lives. The boys led the way and I was only too happy to follow in their footsteps. Here they are ahead of me:

Yes, it is beautiful and I really appreciate snow in this setting . New fallen snow in the mountains is delicious
We trekked up the two miles to Mariposa Grove. We saw some tracks along the way and Peas1 suggested they were probably deer or elk. I said OK but are you sure it wasn't BigFoot on one ski? "Ha ha :rolleyes": those two facety pickney weh mi bring into dis worl reply to mi!
We finally get to the grove. There are several giant sequoias. These are among the oldest living things on the Earth and they are spectacular and humbling at the same time. We looked around and I asked to boys to pick a location where they want to scatter their dad's ashes.
So they picked this tree.
Before I continue, I must tell you that I had planned all this since August. I received written approval from Yosemite's park service - they wrote me a lovely letter welcoming us to scatter Mr. PZ's cremated remains as long as we do so outside of certain number of feet from running water. They also welcomed us to write his name in a book in the Yosemite Chapel which we will do on tomorrow's explorations of the park. Today we just want to follow through on Mr. PZ's wishes.
I have to tell you that as Peas1 scatter the ashes around the tree, I bawled. Peas2 hugged me. Then it was his turn to scatter the remaining ashes and Peas1 turn to hold his mamma.
I then told them that I would start back down the hill. They wanted a little time there alone and I said that was fine and that I would meet them at a rest station about ten minutes away.
They joined up me later. We were famished! We ate the sandwiches, drank the water, and devoured potato chips and apples. We had spent three hours in very cold weather and it was time to head back to civilization!
