aah yes, Robert Campeau's last erection (so to speak). Campeau, a franco-Ontarian fed up with being excluded from the anglo business boys' club, cut a swath through the commercial markets in the US and Canada in the 1980s, and I think, along with Mike Milliken, gave junk bonds a bad name. i remember when he started building the scotia tower - he was in deep trouble financially and i think hoped the new tower would rescue him, but it was too late. he also faced a lot of resistance from the city council about the height of the building, which i think delayed it even more. at the time it was being built, it was going to be the tallest office building in Toronto, if i recall correctly.

saw Miles Davis and Roberta Flack at this venue donkeys years ago. when it was first built it was supposed to be the dernier mot in concert halls, with state of the art acoustics. except it ended up being critically trashed. apparently, there were parts in the hall where you could sit without hearing anything, or where you simply heard a cacophony. it's been tampered with many times over the years as people tried to fix the acoustic problem. i haven't been there recently, but a friend who did said they've fixed the acoustics but messed up the ambience - it used to be all cool (some would say cold) greys and is now all scandinavian piney - maybe a lickle ikeaish.

This artist has quite a few "untitled" pieces and paintings. Perhaps you are correct, it makes us wonder.

Thanks for dropping in and I'm glad you are enjoying the tour so far. As for where black peeps hang out and there not being any in the pics so far, my tour of the downtown core was more about places that grabbed my attention for the history, architecture, or relative significance to the city of Toronto. Along the way I have added pics of other things I consider interesting. So far, I have not seen a black couple holding hands, nor have I seen a black person sitting in a park reading a book, or doing any of the other things that would interest me in taking a picture. Granted, my personal preference is for places and things, but for sure if/when I run into something interesting involving black peeps, I'll include it here.

The upside is that though it is outside of the area I am touring, I do plan on going into an area known as "little Jamaica", so stay tuned [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

Regarding the Scotia Tower, Campeau doesn't quite ring a bell though Milliken and the whole junk bonds thing I remember very well. I am intrigued by your recall of the events sorrounding this wonderful structure. Also, because you have made reference to it a number of times elsewhere, it was great to finally see the Church to which you make your yearly visit [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

This very interesting design is on the backside of the Flatiron building (see page 3). I am not sure if it is made of iron, but I think it is rather brilliant and very creative.



I also found out that the building also houses the Flatiron & Firkin, and in Toronto any Firkin pub is a *great* place to have chicken wings!

St. Lawrence Market...
