From Wikipedia: "Formerly Sherbourne Street Methodist Church) is located at Carlton and Sherbourne Streets in Toronto. Built in 1872, it was across the street from the old site of Toronto General Hospital. Its building is used by a number of other congregations, including the a Seventh-day Adventist church, a Korean church, the Religious Science Centre of Toronto, and Beloved Disciple Eucharistic Catholic Church."

Maple Leaf Gardens! The grand ol' lady of Toronto landmarks.



This former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club has such a vast history, there is no way I can do it justice with a summary here. As the website states: "This venerable arena owns the most incredible sports attendance record of any in the world: Since 1946 there hasn't been a single unsold seat in the house.

Built in 1931 during the depths of the Great Depression, Maple Leaf Gardens retains the same appeal it had during pre-expansion times, when the Leafs were the toast of the league."

There is hardly a male baby-boomer in the city of Toronto that have not seen at least one hockey game here! My first experience of it however was not a hockey game, but rather a "Stars on Ice" exhibition (skating) show. An amazing show, but the seats were definitely not for anyone over 5' 6"!

Another venerable 'institution' in Toronto



From Wikipedia: "Sam the Record Man is a Canadian record store chain.

The chain was first launched in 1936 by Sam Sniderman, as a record department in his family's existing radio store in Toronto. In 1961, the store moved out to its own location on Yonge Street, and its location at 347 Yonge Street has become a Toronto landmark. The four storey record store located to the site in 1961 and added two spinning record neon signs. The record store also obtained the building at 349 Yonge Street in 1985, formerly Steele's Tavern. This location has been immortalized in the Barenaked Ladies song, Brian Wilson as the "late night record shop".

The chain subsequently expanded to many other Canadian cities as well, owning 30 stores and franchising the name to 11 others.

In 2001, poor management and tough competition forced the chain to declare bankruptcy and most of its stores closed. The Yonge Street store was reopened in 2002."

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church...



The church was first established for a predominantly Irish congregation. But as the Irish became more economically settled, they moved to other areas. In 1908, the church was renamed Our Lady of Mount Carmel and became Toronto's first Italian national parish. By 1965, it had become a Portuguese parish, and by 1970, it was Korean and Chinese. The Korean population moved on and today it serves a predominantly Chinese population.

Toronto's China Town was a tad disappointing in that I thought it covered a much bigger area. Basically, two city blocks of shops and restaurants that reminded me very much of the area around Coronation Market in Kingston, JA.
