Thanks much. It was a great trip, and after we returned from San Pedro, we had less than 24 hours remaining in the country. A couple of pics as we made our way back to the Great House.

I believe this is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Church in Belize...



Not much different than in downtown Kingston



We couldn't believe the sign on this building. Just another indication of the lack of infrastructure in the city.

Funny how some people have no shame. We had stopped at this shop to get bottled water, and as I asked the Chinese guy the cost, a Black guy standing nearby replied, "Three dollars US". I told him that could not be right, because it was $2.80 BZD in the supermarket. The Chinese guy then said the price was $3 BZD, at which point I told the Black guy that he should be ashamed himself for trying to rip off another brother. His reply: "I rip off anybody - black, white, doesn't matter. I'm an equally opportunist!" The memory still cracks me up [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

We had quite the experience with a security guard when I was taking this picture of the City Hall buidling. He objected to my doing so without his permission for "security reasons" [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img] Further that he had no idea what I was going to do with the pic, and that he could "seize the film" in my camera (poor guy didn't have a clue that digital cameras do not use films). He went on that it was the law and how he had "studied bombs" in the USA, at which point I said to the effect, "This is Belize. Do you really expect terrorists to come here?" I told him I had previously taken a picture of a police station, and nobody there objected. He then went on to tell us how the police were corrupt, and didn't know what they were doing.

It was the weirdest thing, but after telling him I simply wanted a picture of the City Hall, and I had no intention of using it for "terror purposes", we went on our way. This guy definitely had an exaggerated sense of importance.



A lady had joined the conversation a bit earlier, and as we made our way, she said she did not know of any "law" that said we could not take a picture of the Hall. But she had her own motives. She said she was HIV positive, with seven kids who she needed food for. Long and short, we did give her some money, but the hilarious thing was I heard her saying something to Churchgirl, only to find out later that the lady had asked her for the slippers she was wearing [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]

And of course, there was Harry, our homeless walking encyclopedia. CG can relate that encounter a lot better than I can, so I leave that to her.

We had read that the Span Bridge, one of three in the City, had to be turned when larger boats were passing through, and that this was done manually two times a day, 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. We were intrigued by the manual turning of a bridge, and after sometime back at the Great House, figured we would head back out to see it.



Much to our disappointment, there was no turning that evening as none of the taller boats were scheduled to pass. I asked a guy if it would be turned at 6:00 the next morning, to which he replied: "Nobody wakes up that early to turn the bridge. We're too busy making babies!" \o/ Alrighty, then.

Hilarious stories! So they don't turn it at night, and they don't turn it in the morning because they are rooksin! ROFL....I want CG to come with the stories about the walking encyclopedia! (doesn't it boggle the mind to think what the man could have accomplished had he had different opportunities and life experience?)

Oh, they were quite funny moments, except for the begging lady. The security guard at the City Hall. \o/ CEW is taking the pic and I see this guy coming towards us sans front teeth. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/desdentado.gif[/img] He comes over and starts telling CEW, he's not allowed to take a pic of the City Hall.

CEW: Why not?

Security Guard: Yuh cannot snap pickchos of gov't buildings. Yuh need permission from mi to do so. Yuh know I can tek the flim from you camra?

CEW: Well I don't understand, why I can't take pictures of the buildings. We took a picture of the police station in San Pedro and they didn't have a problem with it.

CG: Sir, we're really sorry. We didn't know. At this point, I'm kinda being the go between, because the guy looks like he was about to take CEW's camera and CEW wanted an answer as to why he can't take the pic. \o/ I'm just way too young to go to a Belizean jail [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif[/img]

SG:Lemme tell you. Dese police man don't know what dey doing. I was trained in di US by deir gov't for terrorism and studied bombs.

Lady: Yes sir (referring to CEW), dese police don't know what they doing and they are so corrupt. Stands behind us

CG: Well, thank you. We won't take any more photos of gov't buildings.

SG: Alright guys.

Lady: Sir, I want to ask you if you could help me out. Sir, I have HIV and 7 children and I'm a single mom. I can't get any help because when I was in the hospital, one of the nurses started telling people I got HIV and now no one wants to help me. I live right dung the road sir, in one room wid all mi kids. Sir whatever you can do would help me.

CEW:You can see the pain in his face. Do you know how many people have come up to us with some kind of story asking for money. It's hard you know, because you don't know who's telling the truth or not.

Lady:Sir, I understand you and I know it's hard to know who to trust. But sir a really need the help.

CEW gives her some money. She's still walking along side us.

Lady:Mam, can you leave you slippers with me. Mam, look at the one I have on. It's the only one I have mam. Please!

CG:Sorry, but I do need my slippers. This lady wanted me to take off my slippers right then and there and walked back to the hotel barefoot. \o/

So further down the road, we see our good friend Harry sitting down on some steps in front of a store, eating some food. It was good to see that he was actually eating because CEW had given him some money that morning (and I had given him the day before). I'm passing by him with a gallon bottle of water we had purchased at the Chinese take-out shop. Harry sees the water.

Harry:Lady! Is da wata yuh gat deh?

CG:Yes it is Harry. He turns around to grab his empty Pepsi bottle without hesitation and stretches it to me. Would you like some water Harry?

Harry: Yes Lady.

I fill his Pepsi bottle to the top and bid him bye.

That was quite the eventful stroll going back to the hotel. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif[/img] Let me tell though GB, you're right. If he was given the even half a chance..who knows.
