The ministry of education is so concerned they are thinking of extending the school term to make up for students who missed classes espe ially Gsat classes...but nuting nuh gun suh...
The ministry of finance are concerned bout the lost of productivity and its impact on the IMF deal they have been meeting about this with that agency... Ministry ah give off the record briefings to journalists and beg RJR fi duh public service announcement on symptoms and prevention which ah guh out pan ever commercial break....

Tourism ministry ah talk bout impact on workers and product....

But wait till deh ministry confirm den numbers given DAT dem ah sen den samples to Trinidad fi Tess.....dere is a 7 day lag between sample and results it seems....

Tourism officials monitoring spread of Chikungunya virus

Tourism Minister, Dr Wykeham McNeil, says the spread of the Chikungunya virus in Jamaica, has so far not had a negative impact on the local tourism sector.

However, he says the increase in cases of the virus is being monitored, to determine whether there could be implications nationally and regionally for tourism.

The Tourism Minister said he has been working closely with the Minister of Health, to help control the spread of the virus and is confident that all being done to address the situation.
“The fact of the matter is that all of us across the Caribbean must be concerned because how the people view it is very serious and therefore it is something that we have to keep our eye on.”

Up to September 13, there were 524 notifications chikungunya of which 251 were classified as suspected cases .
Thirty-one cases were laboratory confirmed 26 were discarded due to negative lab results, 194 cases remain suspected.

I could imagine this illness spreading like wildfire, especially as people have to keep their own water tanks and reservoirs. The authorities in JA can't even ensure regular water supply in the "Land of Wood & Water", so one can hardly count on them to deal with and communicate on this kind of health risk with any reliability.

Jamaica during self rule got rid of the other disease carried by the anopholes mosquito..... and they did it cheaply and effectively led by Jamaicans....

as children we were told to puncture tins to prevent the breeding ground fgor mosquitos, put kerosene on tanks to drown laeve, and encourage frogs in your tanks to eat the laeveave....

Scores of students and staff at the Yallahs Primary School in St. Thomas, who were stricken with symptoms of the Chikungunya virus, are expected to return to classes on Monday.

Over the past three weeks, more than 200 students and 18 teachers stayed away from classes after becoming ill with pain and flu-like symptoms.
Principal Yvette Graham, was among those who became ill.
“I left there since last Wednesday and those with whom I spoke will be out and everyone left before me. I expect all teachers except one and many students should be back,” she told RJR News.

Last week, the Ministry of Education reported that nearly 700 students were absent from 25 schools in St. Thomas due to the mass illness.

And Health Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, has provided an update on the number of confirmed cases of chikungunya.
“Chikungunya cases have now moved to 35 but there are 352 suspected cases and if you look at what is happening in the Americas the number of confirmed cases is a little over 9,000 but the number of suspected cases is over 700,000,” he said.

After they get a percentage of confirmed cases they just dont bother waste money testing ... I remember when my older son had the flu the ped at the Pediatric ER said they had stopped testing as 90% + cases were coming back as H1N1.

There are some people who told me they haven't coming in direct contact with mosquitoes and they still caught the virus.

This happens to people who don't come contract with mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have the tendency to
breed in drum water. Those who are infected without direct contact with mosquitoes caught virus by rinsing there mout or drinking drum water which worst than the mosquitoes direct contact.

That is why some have the symptoms worst than the other.

Every one should boil there drum water even if they only used it for shower.
