Notice the Minister of Education is not making rash statements. Perhaps you missed the parts in blue.

The Ministry of Education says near 4,000 students and just under 600 teachers have missed school due to chikungunya-like symptoms.

According to the Ministry, up to yesterday, suspected cases of the chikungunya virus had resulted in up to 30 per cent absenteeism of staff and students in schools across the six regions.

A survey by the Ministry revealed that 3,911 students and 591 teachers were absent from schools.

The most affected parishes, with 2,487 suspectedcases, were Kingston and St Andrew, which comprise region one.

This is followed by 945 suspected cases in region two, which includes St Thomas, Portland and St Mary.

The least affected parishes, with 23 suspected cases, were Manchester and St Elizabeth which are located in region five.

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites has commended the management and staff of the affected schools for their efforts in keeping the institutions open as well as for providing as much health care as possible to students.

Minister Thwaites has appealed to parents to be on the alert for symptoms of chic-V and other illnesses and to get medical attention for their children immediately.

Chikungunya A Blessing


It is often said that there is a silver lining behind every cloud, and this may be true for the outbreak of the chikungunya virus.For too long, Government, and citizens alike, have treated mosquito-breeding grounds as if they were prizes to be cherished. This outbreak may be the wake-up call Jamaica needs to maintain a clean and safe environment. People will become aware of the dangers of mosquitoes, that is, it's no longer just a bite which leaves a little mark, it can take their lives.
So a national campaign of cleaning up could be killing two birds with one stone - getting rid of the breeding grounds, but also starting the beautification of Jamaica

Never said I don't believe there is an epidemic...I said it is premature to call something an epidemic without the FACTS.

Seems some of you won't be happy until this happens in Jamaica. We are talking 31 confirmed cases... no one has died from this. This is not an epedimic or an example of chikungunya virus is widely in JamaicaYET!

I am not flailing at all. I am not trying to spin anything. I said it was immature, premature and irresponsible to run around talking about epidemic without the facts to support it and I stand by that.
