What I am criticizing is people extrapolating from personal experiences and using them as facts concerning major societal trends and events when official sources contradict them. I will ALWAYS put more weight on official sources and verified reports from bonafide journalistic sources over personal experience. Many here seem to take the opposite view. That is what I am criticizing.

The problem with boys who cry wolf is that they wreak havoc before there is an actual crisis. Don't think our tourist industry needs a hit like this. Wonder if we have had any cancellations as a result of all of these chicken littles running around.

As for personal experience..if people far and wide (as we can see even anecdotally form the sample here) reporting that people they know or relatives are experiencing symptoms consistent with e illness ..why are you trying to downplay that? why are you trying to play with words about what is an epidemic vs what some mean by "widely"?
i speak to my mother she sey a few people she know have it. CB sey her modda and modda in law have it...xavier sey him have 3 ppl who have it

the ppl in st thomas sey absenteeism is high at the schools because of people wid these symptoms...you think is sumtin else do them ..or that is JLP a mek up story and put in gleaner?

See it deh... I knew you and the minister concern about calling a shovel a freaking spade was about the tourism industry ... Maybe if they were upfront about it the man in the article Richd posted would have taken the necessary precaution instead of returning to the States with the illness.

How big is the sample size here compared to the number of Jamaicans in the diaspora? If we total the relatives who have been mentioned her including one of mine who has a confirmed case and the other who SAY she have it but has not been to the doctor, what does that total? What percentge of the Jamaican population does that represent? Not enough to constitute chikungunya virus is widely in Jamaica

The Jamaican word NUFF is helpful in some cases but does not give any indication of actual numbers in this context.

Unlike the others who have contributed to this thread, I am not a doctor, I don't know their symptoms and I don't have a lab in my apartment to confirm a diagnosis. FYI, I have a doctor in my immediate family and 2 cousins who are doctors and not even THEY would make a diagnosis without seeing the patients and getting test results.
I am surprised that you the son of a doctor would advocate this type of haphazard approach to diagnosis.

The recent figure given by the Ministry of health was 35 confirmed cases and over 300 suspected cases.
The Minister put it in perspective when he quoted that there was a total of 5,929 suspected cases of dengue in 2012 and 925 confirmed cases in 2013 and no one was running around talking about the sky is falling. It is still a miniscule % of the Jamaican population.
No sir, I am not playing down anything. I want to know why the JLP and some of the boardites on here have an interest in blowing things WAY out of proportion.

Clearly you do not understand the impact on an economy of having the tourism industry and related industries derailed. I suppose as long as you have bread and it is buttered on both sides you don't give a jot about anyone else's livelihood.
People need to be really more responsible before they wreak havoc with statements like chikungunya virus is widely in Jamaica should not be made lightly before there are facts to back it up. Once the facts to back up a statement like this are confirmed THEN the steps will need to be taken to manage the fallout on the industry.

No need to panic over dengue — health ministry
THE Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of the contagious dengue fever, but said that there was no need for panic despite the growing numbers of confirmed and suspected cases.
"Strictly speaking we are having an outbreak based on the increases in the suspected cases of dengue... The Ministry has heightened its response in terms of all the required strategies to control the situation," Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael Coombs told journalists at a Ministry of Health press conference in downtown Kingston yesterday.
The latest figures released by the health ministry reveal that as at September 29 there were a total of 1,215 suspected cases of dengue fever compared to 887 last year and 3,202 in 2010 -- an outbreak year. There have been five suspected deaths with one confirmed via autopsy.
The ministry said all parishes have been affected to date with Kingston and St Andrew showing the highest incidence of the disease or 50 per cent of the cases. The breakdown of suspected cases by parish showed Kingston and St. Andrew with 599, St Catherine with 71, St Thomas with six, Portland with 19, St Mary with 36 and St Ann with 67 cases. In Trelawny some 20 cases have been identified, 66 in St James, 38 in Westmoreland, 24 in Hanover, 30 in St Elizabeth, 128 in Manchester and 82 in Clarendon.
Yesterday, Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson said the Ministry "is doing all it can at this time to limit the impact of dengue fever on the population". He said some 800 communities islandwide are being targeted for intervention, with some 450 communities already fogged. The health minister said over 3,500 premises have been visited and approximately 5,000 containers inspected and aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites treated.
In the meantime, an additional $11.5 million has been spent on dengue control activities with an additional $14 million committed of which $4 million is designated for the health regions, $4 million for public education and $6 million for vector control.
Recent figures from the Pan American Health Organisation indicate that from 2001 to 2012 more than 31 countries in the Americas have seen a total of 9,847,209 cases of dengue. Central American and Caribbean countries are among those that presented the highest incidence rate during this period. Dengue in Jamaica is usually seasonal with increase in cases occurring after the rainy season or from September to March.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the aedes aegypti mosquito. The virus can only be spread when the mosquito bites an infected person and then someone else. Symptoms of dengue fever include pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, weakness, fever and possibly a rash.
The tally of confirmed and suspected chikungunya cases in the Caribbean takes a big jump, particularly in the Dominican Republic.

The tally of chikungunya cases in the Caribbean, pushed by 19,000 new cases in the Dominican Republic, has surpassed 738,000, and Florida has registered another locally acquired case of the mosquito-borne viral infection, according to public health agencies.
In an update today, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said the count as of Sep 19 for the Caribbean and neighboring regions reached 729,178 suspected and 9,537 confirmed cases, for a total of 738,715.
That amounts to an increase of 22,185 in suspected cases and 886 confirmed cases since Sep 12, the report shows.
The Dominican Republic's tally of suspected cases has reached 486,306, up by 19,240 from a week earlier. Confirmed cases in the country stayed the same at 84. In neighboring Haiti, the case count stayed at 64,695, about the same as it was in late July.
Other places that reported rising cases were Curacao, with 665, compared with just 37 a week earlier, and Jamaica, with 222 cases, up from 17 a week ago.
Meanwhile, Broward County, Fla., home to Fort Lauderdale, reported its first locally acquired chikungunya case on Sep 19. The case apparently marks the 10th indigenous case in the continental United States, all of them in Florida.
The Florida Department of Health in Broward County (DOH-Broward) reported the case in a Sep 19 statement. The agency gave no details about the patient but stressed advice for avoiding mosquito bites and eliminating mosquito breeding sites.
Other locally acquired cases have been reported in Florida's Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, a Sep 19 story in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel noted.

Last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put Florida's tally of locally acquired chikungunya cases at 9, along with 195 travel-related cases. Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands also have had locally acquired cases
