This is one of those light skinned Jamaicans who thought she was bettah dan dark skinned Jamaicans.

The gleaner described her as a "fair beauty" and she was presented to the Queen when she visited.

She was working at a bank and she sent around a petition to get the first dark skinned employee they hired fired because, in her words "she looks like a maid".

She met a White man, travelled to Canada to marry her and then she was in for a rude awakening.

I finally found independent confirmation of the story I have heard for years. Her maiden name was Holt I believe.

Guess not. Her maiden name was HOLTZ not HOLT.

In ten days the Hewitts were married, but it was all tragically unlike Dorothy's dreams. Two witnesses were the only guests. Alone in the cottage afterward, the couple nibbled at the big cake. Four days later, brokenhearted Dorothy packed her unworn wedding gown and other belongings and went back to Jamaica.

What had happened might never have been publicly known except for the fact that Dorothy's father, Noel Frederick Holtz, is the accountant-general of the Jamaican government. When his tearful daughter arrived home, Holtz roused his colleagues to protest to the Canadian government about her treatment in Canada. The Shawnigan authorities, said Holtz, had objected to a "colored woman" on the school property and suggested that Dorothy should leave. Her husband protested about the school's "ancient, musty policy," but he let Dorothy go home alone because, he explained, he wanted to "face the situation out" at the school and make it possible for her to return ater.

Father Holtz's outburst got quick results. The Jamaican House of Representatives unanimously passed a protest resolution. Great to see that the Jamaican government of the time stood up for one of its citizen, how dare Canada degrade this woman and call her "colored".

Okay here is a story about another snooty light skinned Jamaican witch - w + b.

This chick I believe was travelling from the UK to the USA on a boat. Same era as the Holtz chick. Her surname was Marzouca and she did not consider herself to be Black. Anyway, there was a Black guy on the boat and the whole way over, she snubbed him. She was laughing and carrying on with some of the White guys and apparently . I wasn't there but is SOH mi did hear.

Anyway, once they approached the shores of the USA, the Black guy was told.....okay your turn you look after her. The White guys snubbed her after that. She complained bitterly "But I only have a wee drop of Negro blood. Apparently this is where the expression "wee dropper" comes from.

Serves this silly cow who made a jackass of herself right too.

Hmmm.... I wonder if this is about the same story:

It reminds me of a story I heard as a youngster. It is about a Jamaican woman who revelling in her witnesses and delusions, went to the USA and was immediately classified as black. Grievingly she declared that all she had was a wee-drop of African blood. From henceforth she was called "Wee-dropper".

Got my facts mixed up...the boat was going from England to Jamaica with a stopoever in Miami. The Black guy she snubbed was Jamaican and his brother was a Minister. The story came straight from the minister to the person who told it to me.

Some years ago, just after the war, a Jamaican woman who taken part in the services was on her way to Jamaica. She had to stop over in Miami. In those days the races were strictly and there was one waiting room for the whites and one for those who used to be called 'coloured'.

The Jamaican lady was furious when they put her among the 'coloured'. She said she had only a wee drop of coloured blood in from which arose the term in the and the 50s of 'wee-dropper'.

a reader has sent me a news item originating in New Orleans on November 1984. The item is about a woman whose lawyers say that she found out six years that her birth certificate had classified her as 'coloured' and her lawyers have asked a State. Appeals i.e. Louisiana State Court to allow her to change the designation to 'white'.

The woman's name is Susie relation to the Jamaican She is the lirr.it granddaughter of a black slave and a white plantation owner. Her skin is but she found that she was not legally white six years when she was getting a passport to fly to South America. The first suit was a failure. She tried to get a change in a State Law classifying as 'coloured' anyone with as Imle as one-ihirty-second black ancestry as 'coloured'.
