The gleaner described her as a "fair beauty" and she was presented to the Queen when she visited.
She was working at a bank and she sent around a petition to get the first dark skinned employee they hired fired because, in her words "she looks like a maid".
She met a White man, travelled to Canada to marry her and then she was in for a rude awakening.
I finally found independent confirmation of the story I have heard for years. Her maiden name was Holt I believe.
