Jamaicans in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom

The Jamaican diaspora is unusually large, with some estimates indicating that as many individuals of Jamaican descent may currently be living outside the country as within it.


As stated above, the diaspora is concentrated in three countries — the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.


About 637,000 Jamaican foreign born lived in the United States in 2008, with approximately 123,500 in Canada in 2006 and 150,000 in the United Kingdom in 2008, according to official statistical bureaus in each country.


Jamaican immigrants in the United States, who live mainly in New York and Florida, are generally educated and more likely to participate in the labor force than the native born. About half of the Jamaican born age 25 and older had at least some college or an associate's degree in 2008, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2008 American Community Survey. A larger share of Jamaican-born women held a bachelor's degree (24 percent) than Jamaican-born men (19 percent) although the foreign-born population overall (27 percent) and the native born (28 percent) had higher rates.


Thirty-seven percent of the Jamaican born age 16 and older reported working in educational services, and health care and social assistance. Just 2 percent were limited English proficient, meaning they reported speaking English less than "very well."


Jamaicans living in Canada are also relatively likely to be educated. The 2006 census indicated that 12.5 percent of Canadians of Jamaican origin held a university degree compared to 18 percent of all Canadian adults. However, they were more educated than in 2001, when 10 percent of Jamaican-origin adults had a university degree. Also, Canadians of Jamaican origin were more likely than those in the rest of the population to have completed a community college program.


Jamaican-born Canadian citizens are also more likely to be employed than other Canadians. In 2006, 66 percent of Jamaican-born Canadians age 15 and older were working, compared to just 62 percent of Canadian adults overall. Of those employed, around 25 percent were in sales and service occupations, while 20 percent were in business, financial, or administrative occupations.


A significant proportion of Canadians of Jamaican origin are also employed in health-related occupations. In 2006, about 9 percent of workers of Jamaican origin were employed in this field, compared with just over 5 percent of workers in the overall population.


The vast majority of Jamaican-born Canadians in 2006 were fluent in English, or bilingual in English and French; just a few hundred reported being unable to converse in either language.


According to official population statistics, there were just under 50,000 Jamaican nationals legally resident in the United Kingdom in 2008, indicating that the other two-thirds of the total Jamaican-born population hold British citizenship. However, there is also evidence to suggest some Jamaican migrants live in the United Kingdom without proper authorization, although it is very difficult to accurately estimate the numbers involved.


The majority of the Jamaican-origin population live in London, although there are considerable Jamaican populations in other parts of the country, particularly in the Midlands and the Southwest.


Among foreign-born workers in the United Kingdom, Jamaica is one of three origin countries where employment rates for female immigrants are higher than those for men. In 2008, 73.8 percent of Jamaican-born women were employed in the United Kingdom, compared to 66.1 percent of Jamaican-born men.


Recent Emigration Trends


As a result of tighter immigration controls, the official flow of Jamaican migrants to these three countries has been falling steadily over the past few decades, with the number of those emigrating to the United States declining by around a third between the 1970s and the 1990s (see Table 1).


Despite a slight uptick in migration to Canada during the 1990s — which some suggest is the result of entire families relocating — this downward trend has continued in the first few years of the 21st century and is likely to continue due to tightened requirements for labor migrants and political pressure from the recession. However, there are still concerns about the emigration of teachers and health-care workers from Jamaica, and the "brain drain" impact this may be having

Beyond the gangsters and punks are thousands of successful Torontonians of Jamaican descent, physicians, lawyers, tycoons, judges, professors, plumbers, teachers, TTC operators.

These are the Jamaicans you don’t hear enough about — a high-achieving, prosperous community too often eclipsed by Toronto’s preoccupation with gang violence and street punks.Chances are they’re your boss, doctor, banker, caregiver, teacher, lawyer, plumber, university chancellor or the judge you’ll face in court tomorrow. But you could easily forget they, too, are Jamaican, so low is their profile.

“Incognegroes, I call them,” says one enterprising Jamaican who himself is a high-stakes Toronto real estate developer, making millions but flying under the radar, out of the spotlight.

Over 24 hours on Sept. 19, seven Star journalists tracked 50 GTA residents of Jamaican descent to record their impact on the Toronto region.

Designed to mark Jamaica’s 50th year as an independent island nation, the project uncovered a vibrant, productive collective that’s virtually indispensable to the GTA. Taken together, Jamaicans are not a problem for Toronto; they are a boon.

It’s a counter-narrative that echoes a maxim from the island of reggae, jerk and world-class sprinters: Jamaicans run t’ings.

The richest of the Jamaicans in our midst, billionaire Michael Lee-Chin, has stewed over this “untold story” many times. A year ago he left a University of the West Indies benefit gala, held at the Four Seasons, walking on air.

The hall was crawling with smart, accomplished, brilliant Jamaicans and other West Indians who were medical directors, head surgeons, corporate CEOs, investment bankers, managers with tens of thousands of Toronto employees under them.

The room was bursting with a demonstration of his community’s reach, power, influence and imprint, but unlike a gun crime, this was not a media event.

“These contributions are not the headlines, so they are unsung,” Lee-Chin seethes. “Our reputation has been ambushed. A few bad men have hijacked our reputation.”

Muted, near invisible, these “incognegroes” are indeed “running t’ings.” The Star found:

• Howard Shearer, 62, the son of Jamaica’s third Prime Minister, as far away as possible from politics, “married” instead to international Japanese firm, Hitachi.

• Gloria Richards, 71, managing the Queen’s Park apartment for the Speaker of the Ontario legislature in a grand third-floor suite. The venerable Richards has been den mother, steward, gatekeeper and consigliore to 14 Speakers of the legislative assembly over 40 years — often spicing up their meals with Jamaican delicacies. She came to Canada in 1965 – as a domestic worker.

• Wonder boy Cornell Wright, 39, living up to a trajectory that started at North Toronto Collegiate. His Jamaican parents always stressed that he merge his Jamaican upbringing with the politics, culture and public engagement of his birthplace. Now, the lawyer at Torys masterminds the largest corporate mergers in Canadian history.

• Fertility specialist Dr. Marjorie Dixon, 38, who, every day, brings joy to the lives of couples struggling to get pregnant.

• High-tech wizard Wayne Purboo whose firm, QuickPlay Media, is one of the fastest-growing in North America. Anyone who watched the summer Olympics on a Bell mobile device did so on a service Purboo’s company created; the last company he worked for sold for $1.2 billion.

• Julie Robinson thriving in a man’s world as construction manager of Canada’s tallest condo tower — and getting a kick out of colleagues who are puzzled at the Jamaican accent coming out of her Caucasian-looking mouth.

Toronto murders drop after Jamaica-based gang crackdown


Kingston-based Shower Posse suspected of drug-, arms-running in Canada, U.S., Jamaica

Police in Toronto and Jamaica say gang-related homicides have significantly declined in the 20 months since the arrests of key leaders of the Shower Posse, a violent criminal organization involved in drug and arms trafficking that operates in several countries.
Jamaican officials say a drastic 32 per cent decline in the Caribbean country's homicide rate is largely thanks to a 2010 crackdown on the Shower Posse, considered to be one of the most dangerous gangs in the world.
In Toronto, homicide rates dropped to a 25-year low last year following a two-year anti-gang campaign that disrupted the Posse.

Toronto police Chief Bill Blair says the decline cannot be specifically attributed to the arrest of Shower Posse leaders but that the gang's influence in the city has "diminished quite significantly."
Several of the alleged leaders of the Toronto wing of the Shower Posse have recently pleaded guilty to a slew of charges, ranging from drug trafficking and conspiracy to racketeering and gun running.
However, none of them has pleaded guilty to membership in a criminal organization — which comes as no surprise to Toronto police Det. Douglas Backus of the guns and gangs task force.
In gangs, pleading guilty to membership in a criminal organization is tantamount to being an "informant" or a "snitch," Backus said.
"It's a death sentence," said the detective.

Flying under the radar

Toronto police teamed up in 2008 with their counterparts in the U.S. and Jamaica to launch a massive crackdown against violent street gangs operating in the Greater Toronto Area.
[PHOTO]Investigators discovered that large quantities of cocaine and marijuana were being shipped from Jamaica to U.S. cities before being smuggled into Canada, where the drugs were repackaged and sold by street gangs in major cities.
Police zeroed in on a handful of suspected drug suppliers and began wire tapping their conversations. In all, over 200,000 wiretaps were conducted over five years.
In 2009 and 2010, police officers conducted raids in Ontario, seizing firearms and drugs. More than 100 suspected gang members were arrested, including key leaders of the Shower Posse, Toronto police say.
With street names such as "Whoppy King," "Blue" and "Showerman," Posse leaders managed to fly under the radar of investigators. Backus says Posse members were also older and more experienced than the young "hot heads" who run typical street gangs.
"[Shower Posse members] are often quiet and sophisticated when compared to the street gangs that do their dirty work for them," Backus said.

Patience.....I am posting comments about US AND Canadian immigrants from the Caribbean as I find them. This thread is also focuses on the situation state-side in fact that was the initial focus.

Ok, if that's the case, but what I see in my area is an Latino population that is uneducated, barely speaks any english (if any at all) and works at the minimum wage or maybe less? The Latinos that work for less than minimum wage, do so under a ram rod type of Latino boss (mainly construction jobs). The Latino boss is bilingual, and pays cash to his employees, allowing them to skirt paying taxes, social etc...I've seen it first hand.

I needed a new roof for my home. Hired a well known experienced company. The day of construction a crew of Latinos showed up to install my new roof, much to my surprise. Only one spoke english (Latino boss) and he paid them all in cash out of his pocket when the job was complete...and the Social services in my county have Latino women in line every moring with children in tow for medical treatment and other freebies.

These immigrants are keeping wages low for the average American worker and taking jobs away from Americans both black and white.

And, the new poor unemployed is the 50 to 60 yr old person that has lost their job due to the recession, and can't find work because of age discrimination...A friend of mine (white female 60 yrs old) is delivering pizzas to make ends meet. She was in sales distribution for over 30yrs. She can't find work. They say she is over qualified for most jobs she applies for. She says it's her age...I believe she is right.

I believe every one should pay tax..I pay the stuff in 5 countries at the moment so paying in one country is not too onerous. But did u report the company to the tax authorities ? I also beleive there is a law in the US that puts the onus on the person receiving the service.... Here is a case u could make a difference and kick a exploiter in the crutch!

Note there is also sales tax.....I thought the GOP were pro sales tax and anti tax on earnings!

Construction is a cash business regardless of your nationality & immigration status. The italians have been doing business that way for years. A roof got replaced more cheaply due to immigrant labour. Immigrant family used social service network to obtain medical treatment. If you are willing to pay 1.5x the price (or whatever the price differential is to pay a non immigrant labourer) there would be no work available for the immigrant laborer...


yes age discrimination is real for older age workers, the elderly in america are not revered as much when compared to other cultures.

I never said anything about shoving under rug or ignoring issues........educate both parties means to identify core issues and finding commonalities.

To reach an understanding in any situation, it is customary to start on common ground usually something positive...........You on the other hand is doling out blame and casing aspersions which would only inflame the situation.
