I guess you and I have a different definition of what "acting Black" means. To me that is acting ghetto in the urban American sense of the word. The majority of Black people in the world are not ghetto....heck the majority of Black people in the world are not even American. I am surprised that as a Jamaican you wouldn't know this.

I have discouraged the hoodies and hat backwards in my son....I have lost the hoodie battle...but I have never seen him where his hat backwards....certainly not when he is around me. Thank God he doesn't wear those baggie pants. I always discouraged the basketball too but that is another battle I have lost. He and all of the cousins in his age group are into basketball....he certainly did not get any of this from me or his Dad.

We know that every hurt or mistreatment, if not discharged (healed), will create a distress pattern (some form of rigid, destructive, or ineffective feeling and behavior) in the victim of this mistreatment. This distress pattern, when restimulated, will tend to push the victim through a re-enactment of the original distress experience either with someone else in the victim role or, when this is not possible, with the original victim being the object of her/his distress pattern.Racism is a form of oppression that has been systematically initiated, encouraged, and powerfully enforced by the distress patterns of individual members of the majority culture and their institutions. Black people have been the victims, the primary victims in the country, of every form of abuse, invalidation, oppression, and exploitation.This mistreatment has installed heavy chronic distress patterns upon us as a people and as individuals. Instead, these so-called "elements of black culture" operate to lock us into our roles as victims of oppression.Internalized oppression is this turning upon ourselves, upon our families, and upon our own people the distress patterns that result from the racism and oppression of the majority society. As part of our liberation work, we know that we must seek out and direct the attention of ourselves and the world to the strength, intelligence, greatness, power, and success of our people and our culture. We must also constantly seek and root out those features of our present cultures that have been imposed by responses to racism and that keep us trapped in that oppression today.

OW DOES INTERNALIZED RACISM AFFECT US? WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Patterns of internalized racism get played out in dozens of unique ways in each individual. But we have come to recognize that there are certain forms of internalized oppression that are widely experienced by black people in our society. Some forms of these distress patterns are so universal throughout our black sub-culture that they are mistaken for a "true" part of our culture.

These destructive and hurtful behaviors and feelings are not part of our real culture. They are not part of the nature of black people. They are simply chronic patterns (the kind that play all the time and are mistaken for reality) resulting from systematic and institutionalized mistreatment.
Understanding this gives us the safety to undertake the job of identifying all forms of internalized oppression in ourselves and other oppressed peoples. We recognize these as our enemy, as chronic patterns that prevent our liberation. We subject each example we find to discharge and re-evaluation.

On a side note, its really sad how americans have "desensitized" the rest of the world when it comes to this word. There you go again.....with your acting White.

I don't like the basketball because I don't like the macho way these men conduct themselves on and off the court grabbing the hoop and carry on like circus clowns. I don't like the way some of them treat women. I don't think they are good role models for young men.

I'll never forget my son must have been around 10.l We went away and we were watching show jumping. He liked horses then. The basketball came on and he wanted to watch him. I told him my concerns about the basketball players and the image they projected. I told him I felt they were terrible role models. (I also said pay more attention to someone like Tiger Woods who is more cleancut and even bough him the DVD game. I had to eat my words but I digress).

So we watched the basketball and I said it was on the condition he promised me that he would not micmic them and I specifically mentionned the grabbing hoops biziniz. I told him about a kid who had been killed in Montreal jumping on to the goal post (soccer without the net I believe and they were not grounded and fell and killed him. )

Anyway this was at the end of the summer. Not even a month later, I arrived to pick him up at school. He barely made it to the car and burst into tears. He had done something really stupid. That school gym had a stage. The boys challenged each other to jump off the stage and grab on to the basketball hoop. The other boys tried and couldn't do it. He tried..and did it once. That was not enough....he did it twice....that STILL wasn't enough ....he tried it a 3rd time, missed, landed on his neck and he was unconscious for about a minute. I rushed him to emerge. They checked him out. I had to pull him out of school another day and take him to sick kids hospital for a full battery of tests. They said he was okay....but you can imagine the stress.

Anymore questions about why I discouraged the basketball? His grandmother did too....well that hasn't stopped him....he plays....his cousins all play (in Jamaica and North America). One of his cousins has a basketball scholarship to go to university. Nothing I can do about it now.

I would rather he play soccer...and he does. I would rather he take up riding and jumping again...he gave it up when he was 13 not interested. Hockey...that was his idea not mine and he still plays it. I had concerns in the beginning as his cousin who is 10 years older than him. had racial incidents but he has never had any problems. my rule was if we're watching it on TV and the fighting starts, the TV gets turned off. If I hear or see you involved in fights...that is the last day you will play hockey. The coaches have never had a problem with im and I have received nothing but compliments over the years.

It is an American ghetto style. He is not American or ghetto. Why dress like that and look like all the other kids? If another kids does something and the police get a description, why get yourself lumped in and targeted. He doesn't wear the short and flip-flops like some of his White friends do...thank God. He has friends of all races.

Like it or not, when Black boys and men dress like that, people assume that they are punks and react to them like they are punks. Ditto with the hat turned backwards. I have lost the hoodie battle. Thank God he doesn't wear baggie pants. The pants dropping down to show underwear lasted 1 summer... The not cutting hair he seems to have outgrown. My Mom told me to ignore it and the pants and he would stop and she was right. He has never liked going to the barber from the first day his Dad took him....still doesn't. He only goes when he is working for me and I am paying him. He cuts his own hair.
