So you can se what you love but that does not change the fact. In those jobs one had to attend high school. must be lighter than a brown paper bag.
and was paid about above labourers.

There was also alpha commercial college. Most of th epeople from henderson dod cashiering and mostly worked in the country,but not in Holels, banks civil service,etc until after 1968..

Your are being obtuse on purpose...I am calling bullshiet on your statement that the only jobs available to Blacks prior to 68 was menial labour that is BULLSHIET and you know it. Unless in your families upperclass non-black enclave you didn't know that there were EDUCATED working blacks who were lawyers/doctors/teachers BEFORE 1968

I agree with you Tanya, yup even in the 1950s there were a lot of Black teachers (for instance). There were light skin to medium complexioned black teachers and principals as far back as the 1920s. Some even were heads of the Jamaica Teachers' Association when the British were in power. Some were educated at Mico, others at the teachers' colleges throughout the island. A lot of the schools were run by the churches and some of the teachers and principals in the remote country areas would even double as lay preachers and preach sermons on Sunday sometimes. This was a HUGE leg up for many Black families. Their children and grand children went on to be doctors, lawyers, accountants, and consultants in a variety of fields. Some live in Jamaica, some live abroad. <span style="font-weight: bold">All of this I know for a fact.</span>

The elementary schools in St Lucia survived the longest until the 1890s.


The only teacher training institution to survive into the 20th Century and that remains until today is The Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica. Its founding in 1835 makes it the oldest teacher training college in the Western Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world rivalling the famed Battersea College in England.


The survival of The Mico University College in Kingston is rooted in four characteristics of the institution:

First, remaining true to its character as a Christian but non-denominational institution.
Second, its capacity to respond to the changing developmental needs of the Jamaican and Caribbean society.
Third, its ability to attract able and ambitious students and to provide them with high quality education.
Fourth, the performance of Mico graduates in society.

The Mico University College was founded in 1835 as a co-educational institution training British volunteers to teach in Jamaican schools. After the cessation of the Negro Education Grant, when it was determined that it was more economical to train native teachers, The Mico transformed itself into a single-sex male institution training elementary native school teachers. In the 1950s it became co-educational again and remains so. When the Government of Jamaica expanded secondary education in the 1960s, the junior secondary schools were introduced. The Mico included in its portfolio the training of teachers for the junior secondary schools. By the end of the 1970s, The Mico further expanded its training of teachers for secondary schools to cover the entire range of secondary education. By then, it had become the institution, which was training the largest number of secondary school teachers in the country.

Some Black graduates went on to be doctors, lawyers, pilots, even Govenor General.

That still doesn't mean that there were a lot of limitations in terms of job opportunities for Blacks. Even today, teachers don't earn a livable wage.

[/quote]Doctoprs and teachers were hivernment employees,butt were never and still are not consodered civil servant. there were barristers and solicitors. the division prevented blacks from doing the real miney earning aspects of law. Only agter 1968nlaw allowed for all to be attorneys. incidentally solocotors were white, they did not have to go to colloge. all they did was appreticed called articled with their family or foiedn nd then go to england a d do the bar exam blacks werew not alloiwed that priovilige.

The principle and majority of the teachers at my prep school were black NOT light skin Black and with out dating myself I will say I know for a FACT that they had been teaching LOOONG before 1968.

Mico use to be use to train hed teachers for the allage schools that could not educate thildren to th e level that ris reruired for college entrance. colloege nedded Senior cambridge/GCE. the other colleges only trained wpmen for all age schools. they couldnt work in highs chools. Even today many of the teachers colleges still teach ein high schools.

No baby. Even up in the hills of St. Ann, remember St. Hilda's? At one time if you were darker than a certain shade, you probably wouldn't get in. It was mostly whites, near whites, and Chinese. Same story with Immaculate Conception up until a certain point in our history.

Oh yes, good thing you mentionned the nurses Dr. Dudd. That was another opportunity for Black women even as far back as the 1940s and 1950s, maybe even further but I have no personal knowledge of that.
