See, this is the problem. Education is about truth, not balance. A sound education instills truth - and the truth about Africa and Africans will include both the negative and the positive. it always amazes me how opposed black people are to reversing the negative effects of slavery/colonialism/brainwashing;

no one said anything about romanticizing africa...why do people believe that to use a different method fromt he negative brain stimuli that the youth receive is somehow about 'romanticizing' africa;

on the contrary there are overwhelming amount of information out there about africa &amp; 95% of it is negative (aids poverty corruption starvation);
seems to me it would be a good thing to put some TRUTH and BALANCE in the minds of black youth to make them know that the continent is NOT ONLY a hell-hole of aids &amp; starvation...that their people's history did not TRULY begin with slavery...

if the history books we read were LYING then why is the onus on us to supposedly tell the truth?
by telling the TRUTH we will indeed be making things more fair and balanced since their (mis)-education of our youth was based on lies

yes these hood books a run di cut ya now &amp; to me personally they are a disgrace just from the fact that this is all the young people of today are reading...
but then again it is reflective of the time we live in when lil wayne ( a rapper who kicks no knowledge) is considered our greatest artist...the dumbing down of black youth by illuminati disciples is very successful at the moment

it was blacks who were abducted from africa, subjected to inhuman slavery &amp; brainwashing and taught that we were inferior beings...the world was taught that as well since whites controlled the information media...
however when we decide to tell the truth, for example that ancient egypt was a great african civilization, it is us who are accused of racism &amp; revisionist history...
us clearing up the facts about africa is truth and it was the others who were mis-leading..so when we tell the TRUTH- YES it is a form of afrocentrism; africentrism simply means viewing the world through your own eyes as opposed to throught the eyes of someone else- especially when that someone else was your slaver &amp; opressor;
i've seen enough of his brand of 'truth' and i don't mind finding out the real truth;
if done in the right way africentrism can do a great deal of good...surely better than the current state of black youth shooting &amp; killing each other, no respect for elders and literally showing their a$$ in the streets;

when you're a yute how you know what is true. The is the power the eurocentric skkkools have had over us. The power to make blk ppl hate themselves and want to be everything eles but themselves. Our ppl hate Africa and love Europe and believe that our history begins wid slavery.

Thats just the point.. many of US where NEVER taught that we were inferior beings.
I must have lived under a rock in jamaica, but never while i grew up i ever felt inferior.. and it wasnt because of parenting. infact the way my ole man grew us, wid all the beatings fi di least likkle thing, he'd probably be put away if it was NA.

We saw Roots.. Saka Zula, all these moves about the black struggle and segregation, all from the media.. We got CNN and FOX and all the media trip.. Infact probably got more North American programming pon di (thiefing) free Sattelite Dish (that miraculously landed on mi roof during Hurricane Gilbert)channels than I'm getting now from rogers cable for whole a $90 a month.. (and dat dont include Playboy channel)

Suh as far as mi concerned.. this 'we taught inferior &quot; bit needs more teeth.

well yoiu went to school in jamaica so that's different;
you were taught about yourt history and saw black men like paul bogle &amp; marcus garvey as heroes;

in america you would have been taught that marcus garvey was a 'back to africa' scammer who went to jail &amp; got deported.
if you didn't go to school in north america then you are disqualified form talking from a point of knowledge...

only we as a people don't see a problem with being educated by your opressor;
i'm telling you right now some of that stuff in the textbooks were absolutely detrimental to the mind of black youth...

This was a bone of contention for me and it was debated in the 80/90s that traditional high schools in jamaic a needed to teach more about black heroes than they did.

We learn about Christopher ciolumbus, the only Martin Luther we learned about was some whie dude that i think started a church or something called the Lutherans..

How i learned about malcolm X was when Denzel washinton did the movie and the X shirts became a big thing in jamaica.
I found a little book store down the road from Pearnel Charles Arcade name HeadStart and got a book called something like &quot;Martin and Malcolm - American Dream and Nightmare&quot; (or something to dat effect.. been donkey years ago)

We have this illusion that Jamaican education system is this bastion of black pride.. its not.
its Math / English.. Lit (read to Kill a Mockingbird, and Man for All Season, Wide Sargasso Sea, Streetcare name Desire, Shakespeare .. and all that crap) Accounts (for every action there is an equal and opposite tranaction) TD ,Metal Work, PE, geograpy, HIStory (Bismark to Bresnev.. now tell how black is that???) and all the colonial crap you are probably sheilded from her in North America..
So to say the Jamaican Education system instills black pride is dilussional.

What instileld black pride and sense of self is simply life. We hang with the white kids just as we hang with the black or indian or chiney kids.

As mi seh.. we probably really a expend too much energies figing a figh in the antiquated way. Mi naah downplay the NA experience. Mi know many who had bad experiences here. But for each bad one, there were many good ones.
Mi have spoken to Canadian born black bro and sis here that mi heart goes out fi dem stories. But guess what, them can talk to many Jamaicans who have had rough childhoods back home, and these same NA grown blacks hearts would go out for the Jamaicans said way.

Like you, I was never raised to feel inferior to anyone, and I was born and raised in Jamaica. But I was raised as a human being first, and everything else second.

The mistake we make is to believe that 'education' is restricted to instruction in the classroom. I learned a lot more from my rastafarian uncle about Africa and Africans than from our romanticized educational system in Jamaica.

I attended a fine university here in America, excelled like most Jamaicans who come here do, and never for a second felt inferior to my mostly white fellow students, and that's even though I never had the luxuries as a student that most of them had.

Even in colleges and universities that have a strong emphasis on the classics - where their Dept of Classics emphasize ancient Greece and Rome, the school itself usually has a strong Africana/African American Studies Dept staffed by accomplished scholars. The idea of dismissing African contribution to civilization is no longer the case. As was stated earlier, it's better to increase knowledge of Africa within the existing curiculum of schools below the college level.

Afrocentrism is not a respectable or legitimate method of enquiry or scholarship. You don't counter one form of myopia (eurocentrism) with another form (afrocentrism). No serious scholar employs either of these two methods. Getting the truth about Africa out - and here I'm talking primarily about the positives, past and present - is NOT 'afrocentrism', it's called scholarship. Truth is neither eurocentric nor afrocentric.

with all due respect not every black youth has a 'rastafarian uncle' to teach them their real history and who they ARE...
you also speak about american education in terms of the university but the real education of a child's mind begins way before that...
some don't seem to think blacks have a problem; well i do- i see it everyday in the streets;
we have a problem and ignoring the place these same yutes spend the better part of their day (school) is foolish in that we can reach the minds of the youth from early...
what you call myopia i call educating our own...i wouldn't send my own child to the chinese neighbors to give them their most personal &amp; intimate education...i would do it myself; there are still 'regular' schools out there; but if muslims have schools, if jews have schools, if catholics have schools, i see no problem in a school that teaches black youth a new mindset than that which many of them are now exhibiting in north america (and indeed around the world including jamaica )...

Ah. I know this phrase. The test of being 'real' black people, is to support afrocentrism. I see. Talk about 'programming', backwardness. Idiocy? I see where some of the problems of our people lie.

And do you notice that the schools mentioned above - jewish, muslim, catholic - are religious schools. It's quite another to start one based on race. We don't take kindly to KKKs having their own schools. In any case, I don't have a high opinion of religious schools (and I attended one during my formative years - I had to do a lot of 'unlearning' since then). My personal preference, and the one I prefer for my child, is an integrative educational experience. That's my opinion.
