Mixed-race relationships and Britain

For years, a hot topic amongst black women in Britain has been the number of black men who are in relationships with white women. In recent years, more black women have got together with white men. But black women would always argue that this was retaliatory. A question often asked would be, if all the black men were in prison or with white women, what else were black women supposed to do?


So it is intriguing that a recent government report has confirmed what black women have complained about for so long, that there are a large number of black men with white women. The report is entitled Ethnicity and Family: Relationships Within and Between Ethnic Groups. It was produced by a government organisation, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and reveals that 48 per cent of Black Caribbean men are in mixed-race relationships. Black Caribbean women are 'catching up', with 34 per cent in mixed-race relationships. But there is some evidence that this is a relatively belated development. The high level of mixed relationships amongst black people is in marked contrast to the low level amongst other minority ethnic groups. In the Pakistani community, for instance, only eight per cent of men and six per cent of women are in mixed-race relationships. The level of intermarriage amongst Indians and Chinese is also very small.

There may be a number of reasons why the level of intermarriage amongst black and white people is so high compared to other ethnic groups. For most Black Caribbean people English is their first language. This may account for the ease with which blacks develop romantic relationships with whites. Also, Black Caribbean groups immigrated to Britain earlier than some of the other groups. It is more than likely that the first generation of immigrants came to Britain already married to someone from their own ethnic group. In the second and third generations intermarriage is more likely. But it also seems to be the case that the stronger an ethnic group's sense of identity, the less likely they are to intermarry.

For many ethnic groups a powerful sense of identity is often reinforced by religious beliefs. Some people also argue that a black man might believe that marrying a white woman gives him superior social status. It is noticeable that Indian men, for instance, tend to marry within their ethnic group, regardless of how wealthy and well travelled they may be. But successful black men, more often than not, have a white woman on their arm. It is argued that success to some black men means dating outside their 'community'.

The EHRC report believes that high levels of intermarriage are a good thing. A spokesman for the organisation said, &quot;Britain is changing in a remarkable way. One in five of our children are from an ethnic minority background, and young people are six times more likely to be of mixed race compared to adults. The old, polarising debate about black and white is changing and the next generation will not see race in the same way we see it. This is hugely positive and we can afford a moment to celebrate: Britain's diverse culture is becoming all the more fascinating and interconnected. But we can't afford to be complacent, because we face other challenges.&quot; It is also worth noting that some of the leading younger international black celebrities are of mixed-race heritage. Names that come to mind are Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, F1 champion racing driver Lewis Hamilton and champion golfer Tiger Woods.

Some people worry that the high levels of intermarriage by Black Caribbean people mean that Black Caribbean culture in Britain will die out. However, this seems unlikely. This is partly because large numbers of black people continue to have relationships with other black people. But more important, Caribbean culture remains incredibly magnetic all over the world. A culture that produces Usain Bolt and Bob Marley will never die. And, in the Caribbean itself, people know that your skin shade or having a white mother does not necessarily make you any less Caribbean. But in a week that a man of mixed heritage becomes president of the United States, the increasing numbers of mixed-race persons in Britain is worth commenting on.

I believe that alot of these statistics are suspect and highly questionable and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Who said anything about denying reality? I was not specifically refering to the census, but rather how polls and survey's are used to paint a false picture ie 48% of black men are in mixed race relationships, I don't believe it.

That figure is based on CENSUS data not polls and surveys.

I hear you Tropi, but the figure would only relate to the people who chose to participate in asking that particular question. Its clearly evident that black men are involved in mixed raced relationships to a greater degree than their white and Asian counter parts. But the vast majority date black women. I'm suspicious of the way alot of data is collected and deciminated in the UK, as it is often exploited for political purposes.

I have to concur with Uswe on this... This has been extensively quoted ad nauseum however at least on acedemic has questioned it and one whom I respect..... Suggesting that the size and the interpretation could not be projected....
