Jamaican Baseball

I originally posted this topic in the SPORTS Forum, but I wanted to get a wider response hope you guys dont mind.

"I was wondering if anyone could give their oppinion regarding baseball in Jamaica. Please correct me if I am wrong, but the more popular games of cricket and soccer are derived from British influence. Other more popular "ball games" than baseball include basketball and softball, correct? Thanks."

One of the responses I got was that Jamaicans compare baseball to "rounders" a game played by school girls. Is there a chance for the baseball influence in JA if it was introduced correctly? Supposedly you do have a national team which is controlled by the Jamaican Baseball Association. But they represent the nation on a senior mens level. What about kids? Thanks!

If a Jamaican reached the Major Leagues in the US, Japan or any other great ball-playing nation such as Cuba and Dominica it might work. Other than that it would be too expensive.

It would also work if you could get it going at the Basic School Level.

Thanks for your reply. Actually that was my thought, at the school level, ages 5 and up. Maybe I have strong feelings about this because I've seen the positives of organized sports and children, specificly baseball. There have actually been 4 major league baseball players of JA decent. Although I would presume that possibly that they went to university in the US., such as many athletes do. I havent researched that yet though.

cricket is so entrenched...it's like asking america to pick up cricket...too similar to both be big in one country;

i think if given a fair chance it could catch on though

why r we advocating dis? to be a farm fi American sports? we r now working on keeping our talents at home across the board,so why would we want to tek awn a sport dat has no history fi us, in dese economically stagnant time....feh..is okay fi a Chilli type fi grow up an show a talent fi it ovah yah...but fi stawt baseball a yaad cause it mek money fi a few up yah, helllll no.....field hockey, racing, cricket, rounders etc is good enuff exercise wid facilities already in place....kip baseball in the Americas...the Caribbean already ha its own

I wasnt even thinking of it being as big... ur right, it would never overcome cricket. just another option for kids of all ages to adult. It does have advantages, especially if you think soon, how many countries will be playiong in the World Baseball Classic. I have to see how world wide criket is. thx.

an rememba dat wen yankees seh 'world' r 'universe' dem really mean di US...afta all, ongle former US 'protectorates' etc participate in baseball....people like to tink Basketball is a US invention but it was played by eida di Mayans r Incas...so it was already in the Americas long before di US 'discova'

Baseball is unpopular because during world war 2 the majoroty black population had a series of negative experiences woth the Amerocan military.
The Us had large naval presence in Ild Harbour Bay,Port Antonio rtc,and large military bases in vernamfiels Clarendon,and Montego Bay. Sangster started out as a US military Airdase,while Norman Manley was a brutusg base built for their RAF.
well I stated all that just to say that The US brought their Racism with them. The bought no supplies from local blacks.

They only sourced thorugh, Chinese, whites or Indian suppliers which acted as middlemen for the most part.
the black Jamaican labourers were treated worst than animals on the bases.
which resulted in more that a few xases of riots.

So they were kept on base for the most part and as a result interaction with the locals that normally is how baseball has been introduced to the places where they invaded diring the war.

they Even tteated the Japanese better than they did black Jamaicans. So no baseball.
Remember that 40 years ago blacks could not eat at a public lunch countrr in many states.
. Which is not even a dining room, So just think of how these people treated blacks from a 3'rd world country?
They even had large riots on military bases in Florida where Jamaicans were brought to work. In one riot over 50 Jamaicans were shot to death.
mou may notice that although Haiti has a longer period and more frequent US invasions over it's history.
baseball is not popular there as it is in neighboring Dominican Republic, where they were more socially favoured.

im not trying to make money nor do i want to offend you or anyone else. yes, these are my interest. i am not trying to take anything or push anything on anyone who would not want it. i have visted your county countless times, and truthfully, found no other like it. this includes the people also. now i have a family, if ever i were to relocate, i would need to think of them as well, and this part of their interest as well.
