Etta James versus Beyonce: Divas duel No. 2


Etta James must be taking lessons from Faye Dunaway in how to be a diva. Etta James came out swinging against Beyonce for daring to perform her signature song — &quot;At Last&quot; — as the first dance for Barack and Michelle Obama at an inaugural ball. At a Jan. 28 concert in Seattle, the veteran singer let rip: &quot;I tell you, that woman he has singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her ... whipped. I can’t stand Beyonce, she had no business up there singing ... my song that I’ve been singing forever.&quot;

However, that was not the first time Beyonce had sung &quot;At Last.&quot; She played Etta James in the December release &quot;Cadillac Records&quot; and performed that tune among many others in the film. And at the premiere of the picture, Beyonce sang her predecessor’s praises: &quot;She’s a living legend and I want her to love the movie, and I hope she does.&quot; Guess Beyonce now has her answer as to what James thought of her portrayal. Perhaps James is just jealous that she only has three Grammy Awards while Beyonce has already racked up 10 wins and is a nominee again this year?

While Etta James had modest success with the song in 1961, it was first performed in 1942 by Glenn Miller and his orchestra in the film &quot;Orchestra Wives&quot; and became a hit record for the band leader. However, it was another Harry Warren-Mack Gordon tune from the film &quot;I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo&quot; — that got the Oscar nod. It lost to Irving Berlin's &quot;White Christmas&quot; from &quot;Holiday Inn.&quot;

At a concert in Seattle last week, James told the crowd, &quot;I tell you that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her [censored] whupped,&quot; sarcastically calling her &quot;The great Beyoncé.&quot;

And she went on.

&quot;I can't stand Beyoncé... [she] had no business ... singing my song that I been singing forever.&quot;

She even slammed the President himself. &quot;You know your President, right? You know the one with the big ears? He ain't my President.&quot;

James was unable to attend the inauguration for health reasons.

Etta was great...back in her time. She oughta be thanking B for bringing that song back to life, even though they've not so long ago used it it on a car commercial (can't remember which car...jaguar?)

That song has never lost life. It has remained on the list of top wedding songs. And it's Etta's version that is played. Her voice made that song what it is.

I am not a Bey-Watcher but this woman seems to be one of those old folks who should be retired in the public interests.

yea, there's something a little bad-mind about etta james in this instance. she's 71, you'd think she'd have learned a little more graciousness by now.

i wouldnt say destroy the CD though. maybe give it away or hide it away.

The funny thing I don't one not one of Beyonce's songs since she went out on her own, hell I don't even know the titles. I know she was with some group and I most likely have the group’s songs. I do have some Etta's though one CD and some more that she was a guest on.
I am really disappointed that she acted like that towards Bey and Barack.

To think she was also invited to the gig but she was too ill to make it. Maybe if she had taken better care of herself she would have fewer problems. Of course she was mischaracterized in the Cadillac Records because she had scored a hit long before Chess Records, but was that Bey’s fault?
