I wasnt limiting my question to how...meaning whether you call it Hoodoo, Obeah, etc. ... I just meant that if you said spirits cannot come tell you this and that then what is being conjured when Obeah, Hoodoo, or whatever means is used?

that is not what i said, i am saying that it is misunderstood and I can see two reasons for this misunderstanding. Before I used write it off as white-washed.


I said there are some that will respond to that phrase and say that "spirits cannot tell people anything".

Funny you know, me done answer that before you ask. From research I did a month ago 'for teaching' it was rather interesting, the things I saw. It is just like the difference between Obeah and Voodoo. The main things in our modern context is the way people think primarily and the changes in culture we have been experiencing.

But I will give a simple example to draw reference.

If you need advice from your guard, you must do certain things.
you respect a certain time, you must feed him and he will show up when yu na see him, talk to you and leave the same way.


Lets say you dont know anything about Obeah, a parent who usually council you would probably cross your mind while you are doing certain things and in them voice you hear dem tell you wa fu do.

Forgive me but I am really curious.

My grasp is tenuous but I think I am following.

Since the effect of &quot;spirits&quot; in our lives can be as easily accessible us recalling the influence a previous person thru action and deed, when they were alive.

That is a part of what you are saying, yes?

The other part is that for spirits to be effective/present (lack of better phrasing at 12am) there are certain actions you must undertake for it to happen. And that it doesnt happen just so?

you are approaching the ball park.

The thing is our people did have a vast knowledge of many things without needing massive equipments like the case is today. Once you know how a person come to mind, you can in fact create the situation that that person really come to mind. Like the situation with the guard. The problem I also believe this science has is that our need for changing it is unavoidable based on our new environment etc.

What we recall about a person is a pattern, like say what would so and so do in this situation because you knew that person well.

Time is associated with activities and even numbers, as you know it all come in 3s. 12am is for different deeds than 6am or 3am. Early morning for the guard. 12am for the devil

okay, to pull the question out a little further - I understand what you are saying for people that someone has met and known in their lifetime. But what about ancestors you have never met?
Is this where the 2nd part of what you are saying comes in that by certain practices, they show up and influence? If so, how would you know? Or is that too complicated of a question right now?

It is a an unbroken chain, isnt it? and that is why knowing parents, grandparents etc is so important. Those you knew know those you didnt.

but you find with nuff black ppl that they dont know their families etc. So if you dont have that opportunity then sickness and the rest take you cause you are in the dark?

you can always go to doctor anyhow

but we believe in protection, and since to be forewarned is to be forearmed. no guard, no protection. it is both a physical as well as mental thing

a guard can also be you guardian in life who was not related to you.

Dem Haitians are selling them especially to African-Americans and white people. But it cant work so.
I can understand the Haitians otherwise they couldnt make money off of the practices because relatives are so important and so, no other race could participate.

But Asians have similar things going on as well.
