I had a HARD time logging back in. Okay. Here is what he said.

First of all, he said that his parents are Jamaican. I asked him what those scenes were about.

He said it was a ritual, the kids version of roots work, magic, casting a spell. I asked if it was obeah. He said no. The kid has a vivid imagination and its a ritual he made up himself. He said he used to do things like that. I asked if it's a case that he had heard his parents and grandparents talking about obeah and that was the inspiration for making up the rituals. He said "Yeah you got it, that would be a good back story". He said that the didn't have that specifically in mind when he wrote those scenes but that made sense.

He said the star thing was based on oh my gosh what was that he called it a chronogram or something like that.

Anyway, Sukuna was write, it was mumbo jumbo the kid made up.

Well thank you for your help Sukuna. I was wondering what the heck is THAT all about and it was hard to believe that a the son of a Jamaican born, Canadian raised mother would know so much about obeah.

The kid really did have an imagination fi true but then so does the screenwriter/director. He laughed when I told him that. He said the kid is very much like how he was a kid. The chronogram sinting or whatever it's called is shaped like a star and he says he is still into that.

One more thing you mentioned guard or guardian like it was a person. I thought it was an object like a badge or something. People will say things like "mi did ave on guard" please clarify.


Re: roots work vs obeah. So is roots work is like the role the myal man had in Africa, herbal medicines and traditions? Obeah is more to do with casting spells? Have I got it right? I believe Americans talk about roots... I always thought that was their way of saying obeah.

no you have got it wrong.. the fact of the matter it is all part and parcel of the whole.. rictual, folk medicine myth are all part of the same thing.. any attempt to seperate the whole is as is common by belivers in judeo christian myth is trying to rationalise an emotional viseral draw to an echo of history... yep he said what wahalla postulated... you cant seperate shango or the orhisas from the use of folk medicine.. they origianlly taught it...

No you wrong Tropi. But in a way you are right still. There is the use of roots in all of them. I still think that Wahalla is mixing up something here. This is one name that African Americans call it. I do not see it as an attempt to separate roots from it otherwise they could just call it folk medicine as some do. So in a sense it is like their Obeah.

the loas have been forgotten in Obeah...the reason is the socila impact of the metropole colonial religion... there was a form of it in my fathers day he spoke of them to me....

That would be the difference between a charm and a guard. The charm is a consecrated object. Now a very elaborated Obeahman can give you the all in one package where you have the guard in the charm. Which is very powerful. Like when people say 'that a me guard'.

I was referring to the spiritual guard before.

It is not our language and guard has its own meanings in English which matches this all perfectly. However, from research in one African language, it happens to be quite close to the word guard.
