Don't stereotype; the reactions are from how those outside the hip-hop culture stereotype them. Each generation will have a way of rebelling against the system or carving an identity for themselves and the environment they live in including fashion. Rock n Roll and Reggae music were also seen as rebellious and going against the grain/system with its own identity and fashion. Hip-hop is one the best things to happen to some of the poor ghetto yutes who otherwise would have turned out much worse. The same can be said for reggae and rock n roll. </div></div>
40 is right. When people see a black man wearing saggy jeans or a suit, the reaction is the same: they clutch their pearls and handbags in fear. Some even shoot like Bernard Goetz.

Meanwhile, tobacco-juice-spitting rednecks with Confederate flags and rifles hanging from their pickup trucks are seen as good old boys who mean no harm.

Tolerant that word is tricky... I would say more like tolerant racists. The english are very good at speaking to you in a softly 'sophisticated' tone while insulting you. You have to be sharp to realise they are being insultive or even racist. American will call you the N world and tell you straight to your face where they stand. You know the areas in america that racism thrives in more openly than other areas. In england your neighbour can speak to you everyday, laugh and chat with you while is as racist as they come.

jah yute you know that the same can happen to you if you walk down the road at certain time in certain areas in kingston and the same goes for the states. I must admit I never had any fear walking down the streets at any hours a di night in London in any area. Brixton and Peckham included - can't say the same for parts of new york, new jersey and kingston. </div></div>

7. In Europe, to a majority of Europeans, black people are relatively invisible, except for the few who went on vacation to the Caribbean or Africa and found themselves a young man with wash-board stomach to parade around the town square.

8. Similar to the systemic plot of Americans placing a high number of black men in jail, the British does the same, except that they also place blacks in the psychiatric hospitals in high, high numbers, which makes them essential a write-off.

Black people in England seem content with whatever they are doing and I doubt most of them are "bov-vered". </span></div></div>

Still what does all of this got to do with te race and ethinicity.. Me I think it is more important than all the attepts to show that the slavs were slaves. Still you all know this story...

I am well aware of the afrocentric view which is greeted by many.
Just to clear this up as it can be misinterpreted by some reading.

It is about racism in Europe and the Slavs are taking that heat, this is not about proving that the word Slav means slave. Would be BS.

Huge subject. Too huge for one thread...race? What race? Is this limited just how black people are treated, or are how Hindus or Chinese or whites are treated to be addressed, too?
And Europe is all over the place, a bunch of very different cultures with different attitudes to race, which also vary according to which race you happen to be. I hope that made some sense!
In general, Europe has more conservative, monocultural and closed societies than the New World does. The Americas, North, Central, and South, are much more advanced in their race relations than Europe.
And it gets weirder than that. In France a black person who is fully assimilated into French culture will be treated as French, but when the Metro (Subway) doors open and riot police enter the train to check people's ticket stubs to ensure that they have paid, they only check and arrest the poor north Africans.
Or Portugal, where in rural areas there are places where they've likely never encountered an African, vs downtown Lisbon, which can feel like Africa, full of people originally from Mozambique and Brazil.
And I agree with sardine's summary on the UK.

You have not been following I guess. The approach was to look at racism outside of the black view.

Life is not easy for black and brown people. African doctors with degrees from Algeria or Senegal aren't qualified to open their own surgery, but are allowed to work in the emergency rooms of public hospitals for less money than their French counterparts. Africans with degrees as accountants or teachers end up being nannies or street sweepers. The list goes on...

I think it's amazing that the son of a Hungarian immigrant is now president of France, but no French person from Martinique or Guadeloupe has ever been president or PM despite being French for over 300 years.
