I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but heard it yesterday that there will no longer be A JAMAICAN PASSPORT or any island passport...for the participating CARICOM countries, it will be a Caricom passport for Caribbean nationals from Caricom states.

I heard this was coming from last year January. I met a guy on the way back from Barbados and he told me about it. He works for one of those Government organizations.

So, does this mean that we are going to be free to work in any Caricom country? If so, that's fantastic.

How will they handle people who are traveling from countries in CARICOM that require a visa to enter certain countries, such as Jamaicans going to England against those that may not, I wonder.

I was wondering the same thing too Sardine
But I would rather have my Jamaican passport inseatd of a CARICOM passport

Someone from the Embassy, (Jamaican) who spoke said nothing will change. If they need a visa for their original country, ...which I think is most of the Caricom nations, then the same terms will apply, eg England now. Good question .

Me too, I would prefer my Jamaican passport, but as they said, it no longer exists...if you need to change your passport, say it is outdated or lost, you WILL BE getting a Caricom passport.


One caller said it is a good thing to have, in case of serious foreign problems and we must run, even Jamaica might not take you with another country's passport [non-Caricom] eg US if naturalized...something might be in that.

Exactly! I can't see many Jamaicans wanting to give up their Jamaican passport for a CARICOM one. I certainly would not and I have a Jamaican passport.

Of course we can work in other Caricom countries...I think this is/was part of Caricom's agreement...haven't you seen how many Trinis and other Carribean people who are living in Jamaica and vice versa?

The PDF is supposed to have a table with the Caricom countries and the dates on which they converted over to Caricom passports.

Interesting,but what are the advantages,what about those of us who live in the diaspora who doesnt travel on a jamaican passport anymore ,and have long discarded it as useless.

Do you know if the countries in the European Union have one EU passport or do they still use their individual country's?

I didn't know that, for all this is news to me as well...in fact there will be some meeting or the other this week in NY [call the Embassy for locale] to answer questions...I am still reeling over the matter as well, soh ackshally this thread was done in the hopes of anyone having any light whatsoever to shed on the matter.

Here in the EU we use our country`s individual passport,the only thing thats changed is the currency,except for the UK which has so far refused to give up the pound for the euro.
