I'll tell you when it's useful. If you're travelling to the Middle East, India or Pakisatn, hotels always ask for photocopies of your passport when you check in. They started to do that in Canada last year. Trust me, from now on, I will be giving them my Jamaican rather Caricom passport to copy. The first thing those Mumbai terroists did was go to the front desk and pull out the folder with the passport photocopies. They then started banging on the doors of anyone with a USA, UK, Canadian, or Australian passport. Same thing happens when there are hijackings. If you have a Jamaican passport, they are unlikely to bother you. When you're overseas just let people know you're Jamaican and they smile and say oh &quot;reggae music&quot; &quot;Bob Marley&quot;. Aftah dat, everyting cook and curry. </div></div>

So true Tropi...Neutral, if you want a Jamaican passport, thien this is what you will get, but you don't have to apply if you don't need a &quot;Jamaican&quot; passport anymore...

Now, with a CARICOM passport, how will they tell the difference?

The whole idea is/was one is not perceived as AN AMERICAN/or whatever nationality they hate...Americans are very hated overseas especially in the East...*I* had to register at the American Embassy &quot;in case we need to evacuate you..&quot; The Jamaican embassy was in Addis Abbaba, [3 days journey away if you can get a plane] so I was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea...but...

Your Jamaican/Caricom passport can save you, trust me on that more...many more things I ould say.

Well you guys have certainly showed me an angle I`ve never thought of before,my jamaican run out about 10 years ago and I`ve never got another one,but with the world the way it is now it looks like it could be an asset as I do a lot of travelling.

Which American passport is Burgundy? My kids and my husband's passport is right here in front of me and they are blue. My Jamaican passport is burgundy.

I meant that I will now be forced to go and get a Blue (American) passport to avoid having to get a CARICOM one.

Me too, I would prefer my Jamaican passport, but as they said, it no longer exists...if you need to change your passport, say it is outdated or lost, you WILL BE getting a Caricom passport.


One caller said it is a good thing to have, in case of serious foreign problems and we must run, even Jamaica might not take you with another country's passport [non-Caricom] eg US if naturalized...something might be in that. </div></div>

That being the case would there then be a reason to be restricted to applying for the caricom passport from your home country?

Applying for my Jamaican passport was on my &quot;to do&quot; list but I kept procrastinating. This really upsets me.

They should have kept the individual passports just as they were and perhaps incorporated a small CARICOM holographic label on one corner of the front cover and another on the info pages (or some such thing).

Traveling on a Canadian passport was considered very safe up until we got involved in the mess over in Afghanistan. Now apparently we have been marked for death by the Muslim extremist.

Jamaica's version of the new CARICOM Passport (CP), will be launched in January 2009.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), Jennifer McDonald, speaking at yesterday's (Dec.17) JIS 'Think Tank', said that the document will bear the CARICOM logo and the words 'Caribbean Community' on the cover.

&quot;It will also bear our Coat of Arms with the word 'Jamaica' as the issuing state written underneath. The CARICOM logo will also be imprinted on the inside pages of the document,&quot; the CEO disclosed.

She added that the inside pages of the passport will have perforations and other security features that are contained in the Jamaican passport.

According to Ms. McDonald, the CARICOM Passport is really a Jamaican Passport with the CARICOM logo and features, and Jamaicans will not be disenfranchised in any way in their travels when they use this passport.

&quot;I know many Jamaicans tend to be highly nationalistic and it does not mean that we are losing any of our nationalism by embracing regionalism. In fact, we are becoming stronger and there's really nothing to fear with the 'Jamaican' CARICOM Passport,&quot; she assured.

The CP, which may be used for intra-regional and extra-regional travel, was conceived when Regional Heads of Government agreed on the introduction of the document as a defining symbol of regionalism. It is being adopted as part of measures to facilitate smoother processing of CARICOM nationals transiting the region and is a major thrust of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

A number of CARICOM states have already introduced the CP including Trinidad &amp; Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana.

According to Ms. McDonald, the CP &quot;is really intended to foster a greater sense of community within the region and will be a tangible demonstration of one's membership in the Caribbean family&quot;.

She said that the introduction of the CP will not interfere with the validity of current passports. &quot;We will not recall any existing passports. Your existing passport is still a valid travel document. The CP will exist alongside our national passport until the national passport expires,&quot; she advised.

The CP, which is machine readable, will come in three colours: dark blue, which will be for ordinary use; green for officials on Government business; and burgundy red for diplomats. The application process and the application forms for the CP will remain the same as when applying for the regular passport. The cost for obtaining it will be the same at $2,500 for adults and $1,500 for minors.

Here in the EU we use our country`s individual passport,the only thing thats changed is the currency,except for the UK which has so far refused to give up the pound for the euro. </div></div>


How does the EU hold up to the pound? which is worth more?
