I don't have a problem with the art works you post above. I have seen African statues of art that push the boundaries for some people. An artist will cater to different tastes and audience. Some will produce thought provoking material, other artists reflecting their own interpretation of something, someone, a situation or someplace.

Art is an arena yuh haffi approach with an open mind and see things from the different viewers prospective including the artist - agree disagree etc. A lot of art painted by the famous european artists have painted naked bodies showing full nudity for display in churches. Said church members and leader praise these arts/painting and bigup the artists while being completely negative if say other artists paint pictures of nude men and women posed in a similar fashion as dirty, smutty abomination. Hell, art can be seen as a few random lines and paint splashes on a canvas

Just to add, some art do push the boundaries to the point of being offensive. Again offensive art is in the eye of the beholder. What you find as thought provoking art I may find as deeply offensive and visa versa.

after michelangelo completed the sistine chapel there were complaints about the amount of nudity in his work, and one pope wanted a lot of the naked men stripped out (in particular a set of them called ignudi, who really had no part in the religious story michelangelo was depicting). nudity in religious imagery was not actually common. even christ on the cross had his genitals covered, usually.

nevertheless, your point is taken that context does affect perceptions of art and artistic merit - did so then,and even today, see the discussion we're having about the photo.

What I see is that no matter what some may try to do to stomp out the truth, the truth always seem to find them.

It would be interesting to find out whether the african image suffered any indignity at all. Indignity, being subjective could have been emphasized by the artist, to highlight manufactured lies and insecurties raised in modern art. I am not sure if there was a way for the artist to simulate/steal the idea without &quot;baring&quot; the ORIGINAL truth...:/
