The Association for the Resettlement of Returning Residents is reporting that since the start of the year, 27 returnees have been attacked on their way home from the airport.

This has raised concerns that criminals are targeting persons leaving the Norman Manley International and Sangster International airports.

President of the Association Percival LaTouche says crime and the difficulty in doing business in Jamaica are deterring persons who want to live and invest here, which causes the country to lose billons of dollars in savings, pensions and skills.

He says the government needs to do more to stem these incidents.

Someone explain this to me. Other than ppl being targeted from family members who know in advance that other family members are returning at such and such time, how do other criminals have any idea that the person they are targeting is a returning resident or not?

Some returning residents have not only acted naive,they`ve been totally stupid as well,I heard of one case where the guy came back from the UK with a suitcase with £60,000 cash in a suitcase to build a house.

The guy that he chartered from the airport took him to where he was staying up in the hills,after dropping him off the driver returned about 30 minutes later and asked him if he could come and help him as he had developed a flat tyre a bit down the road,....my guy and his wife <span style="font-weight: bold">both</span> left the yard to go and help the driver,....when they got to the car the tyre miraculously mended itself,and the driver drove off.

On their return to the house every single piece of luggage they just dropped off on the verandah....including suitcase full a money.....was gone,they had not even had time to unpack.

It seems like the &quot;driver&quot; had already phoned his mates and set up tings long time before they even reached the house.

cell phones make it very easy I'd think
one somebody at the airport lookin for a mark and
someones else on the road waitin for the call

Oh, okay I see how it can work.

I guess it doesnt matter if the taxi you charter is a registered, legitimate running taxi or one of those ghost taxi, they can all up to no good.

They dont have to know that they are returning residents,it`s enough for them to know that the person has just got back from abroad,has a lot of luggage,and possibly lots of foreign cash,......and I also think that any self respecting robber will be able to determine the ones who just left yard an come back,from the ones who left a long time ago and may as well have a sign that says....&quot;mi juss come back fram farrin after being away fe tutty odd years,mi have plenty cash an valuables,come mr teef come rob mi&quot;.

Exactly !!!

The taxi even though it may be legit he can still give his accomplice a call an set tings up,...a so it run.

Now I see why my family carries on like they do when I say I am coming. If one of them cant come to pick me up, they make me change my arrival date before they let me book a taxi from the airport.

What both your comment Neutral and T.G.'s show is the level of corruption that runs thru and thru for that kind of -ish to be pulled off consistently with few ppl ever being caught for it.

Funny you should say this,in 2006 I attended my cousin`s wedding in JA,...quite a few of us family members from the UK went out,my sister took her 21 yr old son,he had his suitcase went missing at mobay airport during the melee to get to the car.

The suitcase was picked up by airport security and taken to their office,....they emptied it and took everything out of it,my nephews entire wardrobe for the two weeks were stolen by the airport security.

In the end after my family in jamaica threatened the security company with legal proceedings and made a few well placed telephone calls they decided to compensate my sister for the loss of the luggage and its contents.

It is a very serious thing,unless you know who is picking you up dont get into any vehicle until you are very sure whoever is picking you up is sent by your family.

At first it would make me insane cause I would think, I am a grow-[censored] woman, I dont need all this babysitting business. But then you here how things go for others and I dont let it irk my like it used to.

Neutral - airport security was that damn bold face with the theft? How come they just dont turn back the items because the amount of compensation isnt even going to touch what the real value of his lost items were.
