I find it interesting that all now tropicana can't respond to my post on page 5 where I provide her with words out of the mouths of hardcore racists, who don't follow her one drop rule.

As always tropi, I agree that we have some self loathing blacks. But there is a difference between pretending you have no black in you which we can both agree as wrong, and recognising you have it but identifying as mixed, or having so little that it doesn't count even by the standards of the racist whites.

A case for the identification as mixed. So my friend who is one half black and one half chiney, who grew up with old chiney scrolls and proper chiney food(which let me tell you the restaurants not giving you), and chinese art around his house, as well the black aspect to his culture, by your logic should identify solely as black?

And how does my identity affect my points? Either refute them or concede.

The one drop rule is your rule because you are the only one applying it anymore! That is the point! It might have been created before you, like a house may have been built for someone else, but like that house that was built for someone else you have bought it and it is now yours.

It was what I was alluding to in an earlier post when I called it an &quot;absurd social construct.&quot; Yet, society classifies me as a black man, and something with which I have no problems. Sometimes, in filling out certain forms, I have to put down a specific race, but when I can get away with it - and I've been doing this for years - I tick the &quot;other&quot; box and write in &quot;human being.&quot;

Your post in defense of Tropicana may make some good points but it is irrelevant to the discussion that I think Tropi started. No one denies the history of racism, and it current manifestations, so I won't waste time going talking about that. What I wanted to get at was why it bothered her so much that people are not identifying themselves as &quot;black.&quot; It seemed she was deeply troubled. My view is that I don't give, as I said before, a rat's behind, how someone chooses to identify him/herself. In my view, there is no such thing as racial purity, and there is but one race - the human race. Does that make me indifferent to the reality of how people are viewed on the basis of skin color? No! But I find that I have less headaches. And I will join in any effort (and I have done so) to work for equality of all peoples, especially in racial and religious discrimination. I have in me, as numerous Jamaicans do, the blood of black Africans, Caucasian and East Indian. Now there's not a damn thing that I did about my racial makeup. I reject the suggestion by some that someone of mixed race suffers from some sort of identity crisis. The implication is that you will not be sufficiently 'black' and will not be knowledgeable about ones 'blackness.'

I long for the day when our differences can be celebrated and not used as division in the human family. I long for the day when we can fully embrace the vast richness of humanity, immerse ourselves in all the good things that we all possess and contribute. I know who I am. I take from all cultures - African, European, Asian, etc - the best things that they have to offer and I enrich my life's experiences. I have no time for parochialism. Life is too short.
