Recently, I was watching the rescue of the political prisoners from FARC - Ingrid Betancourt, etc, etc - a doc on Nat Geo. Stunning.

They held one man hostage for 10 years - <span style="font-weight: bold">TEN YEARS</span>!!

They didn't kill him. Just held him.

Sorry - while I <span style="font-weight: bold">might</span> understand their issues - Allowing letters to your family or phone calls - don't care - that just don't fly.

JY - here's a recent one but before the dust ups going on the past few weeks re piracy, I do believe there were some hostages killed last year and the years before - by Somalis.

<span style="font-style: italic">(not that it should make a diff ANYway, which nationality killed hostages - the hostages are still dead - a human life still gone)</span>

I still rate the Somalis for standing up for themselves. Other Africans just let Euros and Asians scoop up all the riches they can find on the continent and gone...

I don't feel sorry for any of them. They are the flotsam and jetsam of criminal enterprise who could care less about any ecological damage that might have occurred off their shores. Money is their one and only motivation. No one has the right to kidnap another individual and demand ransom. There is not justification, whatsoever. Maybe Somalia will one day pull themselves out of the crap hole of failed statehood but, until then, it would be best if they find other avenues of revenue. Even the drug trade would be a step up from piracy.

I agree. the News reports celebrating their deaths is tasteless. We are talking about desperate people living in a nation with no government and no jobs. Where is the discussion about helping out Somalia and helping them get in a new government and some stability?

I disagree with you big time. If these wealthy nations have ships crossing in their waters and they have not even a government, what do you expect?

The exact same thing could be said of the US,...and all the other multi-nationals who swan around in the waters of poorer countries dumping their s-hit with impunity.

I agree,....but yet the aid continues to flow in,do you really think the people who is responsible for taking in the aid is not aware of who benefits...?

I wouldnt call anyone "islamic militants",...they are whatever the Us say they are,...and it will label anyone accordingly when it is in its interest to do so,.......when the russians invaded afghanistan the "brave freedom fighters" were called *mujahadeen* by the americans,...but when it is the americans that invade afghanistan then these same brave freedom fighters then became "islamic terrorists".
